Maynooth Film For All: La Antenna

Maynooth Film for All: La Antena
Maynooth Film for All: Film Club continues to bring the best of contemporary film to north Kildare audiences. The club’s next screening is La Antena on Wednesday, 8th April at 7.45pm, in JHL2, John Hume building, on the north campus.

Dr Catherine Leen, Spanish Dept. NUIM will introduce the film. Catherine’s research and teaching interests include Latin American Literature, especially the contemporary Argentine short story, Chicano Literature and Latin American Cinema.

Esteban Sapir's La Antena, or The Aerial, is smart, sophisticated silent-era homage with modern concerns. The city rises up from a pop-up book image  -  a city whose residents have lost their voices. The sweaty, smarmy Mr. TV is the owner of the city's one TV channel and a corporation that stamps its seal, a hypnotic swirl, on a range of products. It is unclear whether the city's silence is down to the residents or a ruler, but Mr. TV sets out to complete his control by stealing their words.

Dark, cartoonish and beautifully shot in black and white, Argentinean writer/director Sapir's surreal homage to silent film noir is the best surprise to come out of Spanish language cinema since Pan's Labyrinth

These screenings are friendly, informal and intimate- a chance to see top quality art-house cinema from around the world, in good company and engage in some lively chat and discussion afterwards. Membership is open to all over 18yrs. and costs €10.00 for admission to this film and our last screening of the season on 6th May - You Kill Me the black comedy starring Ben Kingsley. Students pay just €2.00 per screening with valid student card and admission for non members is €8 on the night.
