Details for the upcoming Laban Guild Dance Leaders Course

 

THE LABAN GUILD CREATIVE DANCE LEADERS COURSE                      

This highly acclaimed CPD course runs over 12 week ends. It is mainly practical and covers the basics of movement analysis, teaching styles and strategies and dance making for groups.

The dance work is creative and has the potential to improve personal dance performance and leadership skills.

It is applicable to many areas of professional life such as work in the creative arts, education, teaching in general, therapy and social work. 

 THE LABAN GUILD DANCE LEADERS COURSE -

 A RESOURCE FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE     

THIS 150 hr PART TIME COURSE WILL –

  • Provide a philosophical framework of principles, based on Laban’s Analysis

        of Movement, on which you can found your work

  • Help you to recognise and articulate the movement skills essential for realising the creative  potential for dance in yourself and others.
  • Help you to develop practical dance skills.
  • Foster the development of emotional intelligence.
  • Promote a commitment to inclusivity – Dance is for Everyone.
  • Provide experience of, and information on, various teaching styles and strategies.
  • Provide information on relevant current legal requirements.

 

ALL THESE SKILLS ARE TRANSFERABLE TO YOUR OWN AREA OF PRACTICE.

 

THE COURSE WILL ALSO FOSTER SUCH GENERIC SKILLS AS:

  • The ability to work as part of a team, showing co-operation, leadership, decision making and sensitivity to others
  • The ability to solve problems, set clear tasks, evaluate and give constructive feedback
  • The ability to respond flexibly to changing situations; to accept challenges and to be open to new ideas.

 

THE COURSE WILL ENHANCE THE WORK OF:

Teachers in the education system who wish to improve their dance skills and gain confidence in delivering the requirements of the National Curriculum

                Dancers who wish to acquire leadership skills

                Dance teachers who wish to develop a more creative approach in their work

                Drama teachers who wish to extend their movement and dance skills

                Social or Care workers who wish to use movement and dance

                Community Arts workers who wish to extend their movement and dance skills

 

This is not a course for beginners. All applicants must demonstrate some experience of dance or movement AND experience of teaching or community work.

        

COURSE STRUCTURE

This part time course extends over approximately15 months and includes:

  • 11 weekends of practical and theoretical study
  • Assignments to be completed at home
  • Opportunities for discussion and individual tutorials
  • A final assessment weekend for those who have completed the course.
  • To offer course members a framework for leading creative dance sessions in a range of settings
  • To develop a practical understanding of Laban’s Analysis of Movement
  • To encourage the undertaking of further professional development.

Course Content

The course comprises three main modules:

  • Four weekends in which the basic principles of Laban Analysis are experienced through the medium of creative dance.

The focus is on concepts of body awareness, spatial awareness, quality of movement and  relationships.

  • Three weekends on the preparation and delivery of creative dance sessions.

       These cover: structuring a session, the use of different teaching styles and   

       strategies and the essentials necessary to deliver a safe class.

  • Four weekends on developing ideas for dance and making dances.

              These will include some advice on adapting the work for different groups.

Course Requirements

Each course member is required to:

  • Attend a minimum of 80% of the 11 teaching weekends and participate fully.

If full attendance is prevented by unforeseen circumstances, it is the  

responsibility of the course member to satisfy the moderator that the work   

has been covered by other means.

  • Keep a coursework file/journal containing notes on the practical and theoretical sessions of the weekends together with personal comments and evaluations.
  • Keep a diary of community dance work, other courses attended and performances seen between course weekends.
  • Complete various written and practical assignments involving reading, observation, collection of resources and the preparation and presentation of teaching sessions.

 Practical work, course work files and assignments will be assessed by course tutors   

 and a panel of assessors overseen by an external moderator.

 Those members presenting themselves for assessment will have to show evidence of 

  knowledge and skills gained and be able to demonstrate skill in preparing and   

  leading a practical creative  dance session based on Laban’s Analysis of Movement.

  

COST: €1500.00

The cost of each course, comprising 150 hours, 12 week ends of mainly practical study, led by highly experienced tutors and including assessment fees, tutorial advice and  course manuals, is individually calculated for each venue. This will be set by Kildare Co. Co. Arts Service. It may be paid in stages over the first half of the course. Additional to that will be a registration fee of €90.00 to the Laban Guild, including two years membership and termly on-line magazines.

 

VENUE and DATES:

These are arranged in conjunction with the host agency.

The venue will be McAuley Place, Naas, Co. Kildare

Courses can only be arranged when there are sufficient applicants to make them financially viable. The Guild receives no external funding and, as a Charity, is not allowed to make

more than a set proportion of fees, to be put back into training. If the course can go ahead,

it will run between March 2017 and  May 2018.

Q.         WHAT DOES THE COURSE CONSIST OF?

A.         11 teaching weekends, plus an optional final assessment weekend, totalling 150 hours.

For the award: a minimum of 80% course attendance, a final satisfactory assessment, the completion of assignments set after each weekend and a record of course work. 90% of a W/E’s work is usually practical.

 

Q.         HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

A.         The course will run between March 2017 and May 2018.. A week end usually consists of Sat. 10.00am – 5.30pm and Sunday 10.00am – 4.00pm.

            Proposed dates:  2017 – March 25/26, April 22/23, May 20/21, June 17/18, Sept.15/16, Oct.14/15, Nov.18/19

            2018 – Jan.13/14, Feb.10/11, March 10/11, April 7/8, May 12/13.

 

Q          WHERE WILL IT BE HELD?

A          In McAulay Place Arts and Culture Centre, Naas, Co Kildare

 

Q.         CAN I SAMPLE THE WORK BEFORE APPLYING FOR A PLACE?

A.         If you have not attended the introductory day or a Kildare summer school in Maynooth, we will try to put you in touch with a Laban practitioner who has completed or tutored on our course.

 

Q.         HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

A.         The course will cost  €1500.00 payable to Kildare Co Council, plus €90.00 registration fee payable to the Laban Guild, which covers the cost of course materials and two years membership of the Laban Guild.

NB: Each course is individually costed as The Laban Guild is a Registered Charity and so not allowed to make excess profits. The course can only run if numbers make it financially viable.

 

Q.         WHEN DO I PAY?

A.         The registration fee of €90.00 is payable to the Laban Guild on application. This will only be refunded in the event of the candidate not being offered a place or the course being cancelled. Staged payments of fees may be possible by arrangement with Kildare Co Council, but fees must be paid in full before weekend seven. Q.         CAN ANYBODY JOIN THE COURSE?

A.         The course is not for beginners. You need good dance or movement experience and some experience of teaching or community work, plus a reference.

 

Q.         SO, WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE COME ON THIS COURSE?                                                                            

A.         All sorts of people, providing they have the necessary experience and love of dance. There are usually quite a few teachers and dancers, but others may do anything. Recent course members have included drama specialists, yoga teachers, psychotherapists, physiotherapists, artists, social workers.

 

Q.         WHAT WILL I GAIN FROM IT?

A.         THE COURSE will give you a practical grounding in 3 modules: Laban Analysis, Teaching Styles and Strategies, Dance Making and Choreography - through a wide range of dance experiences. There are also modules on Leadership, Marketing, Safe Exercise and Duty of Care. Most of the course is practical.

THE EXPERIENCE is acclaimed by course members as being of the greatest value in their work, whether teaching, choreographing or performing, and in their personal lives, through enhancing self-confidence, communication skills and self awareness.

THE AWARD is a National Governing Body Award, generally rated at Level 4. It gives access to further training and places your name on the Laban Guild Dance Leaders Register, making you eligible to apply for insurance.
