Maynooth Film for All: Taxi to the Darkside

Maynooth Film for All: Film Club continues to bring the best of contemporary film to north Kildare audiences. The club’s next screening is the topical and hard-hitting documentary Taxi to the Dark Side. On Wednesday, 4th February at 7.45pm, in JHL2, John Hume building, on the north campus. This Oscar winning film examines the US military’s by now notorious practices of arbitrary detention, torture and extraordinary rendition.

Director Alex Gibney uses the case of Dilawar, an Afghani taxi driver, as his vehicle for an examination of the controversial tactics employed by the US in its so-called ‘war on terror’.

In Gibney’s hands this film is at once critical and fair-minded. It includes interviews with former inmates of Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib, and several of the American servicemen and women who were charged with operating the detention facilities.

The multi-talented and prolific Gibney also produced “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” (2005) a scathing look at corporate greed gone wild. His latest film, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, examines the life of Hunter S. Thompson and his "Gonzo" style of journalism.

These screenings are friendly, informal and intimate- a chance to see top quality art-house cinema from around the world, in good company and engage in some lively chat and discussion afterwards.

Membership is open to all over 18yrs. and costs a recession-beating €21.00 for the remaining season of four films.  Cost to students €2.00 per screening with valid student card and admission for non members is €8 on the night.
