Mapping of Kildare County Childcare Committee Services

A strategic mapping exercise for Kildare County Childcare Committee (KCCC) was completed by the Kildare County Councils CRSO in Autumn 2006. The purpose of this project was to provide KCCC with:

  • A comprehensive audit/stocktake of childcare provision in the county – including details of numbers of places, locations, types of services offered, age ranges catered for, etc.
  • An analysis of the unmet need in the county.
  • A list of the key priority areas for the County Childcare Committee for funding under the new Childcare programme.

In order to achieve these goals, the CRSO mapped (using ArcGIS and the Geodirectory) childcare provision in the county by types of services offered, age ranges catered for, numbers of places etc.. Staff of the CRSO also carried out analysis  of existing Census and other data highlighting population densities, age profiles, labour force participation, locations of lone parents and areas of deprivation in the county. This mapped data was then compared to the maps of childcare provision in Kildare to highlight areas of service need. The subsequent report, produced by the CRSO,  emphasised key priority areas for the County Childcare Committee for funding.
