IMPORTANT NOTICE
Driving licences and learner permits
After Friday 11th January 2013, driving licences and learner permits will not be printed at or sent out from this office. All licences and permits issued from Monday 14th January 2013 will be in plastic card format and will be dispatched directly to customers from a single national card production centre.
Kildare County Council will continue to accept and process all applications as before, but this office will not be in a position to deliver a driving licence or learner permit directly to any customer. This includes all emergency and/or urgent situations such as driving tests, foreign travel etc.

PLEASE NOTE: CURRENTLY THERE IS A 6 WEEK BACKLOG IN PROCESSING OF DRIVING LICENCES. IT WILL TAKE A FURTHER 3/4 DAYS (AS PER RSA) FOR THE LICENCE TO BE PRINTED AND POSTED BY THE CARD COMPANY.
To Apply For A First Learner Permit You Need The Following:
- A completed application form D.201- All questions must be answered on a First Application.
- A theory certificate in the category of vehicle (eg: B Car, C Truck) if you are applying for learner permit
- Original Irish or British Birth Certificate or Passport (Non EU Passport with current Visa or cert of registration) National Identity Cards accepted as per RSA.
- Original Marriage Certificate (if appropriate)
- A Medical Report form D.501 for classes C, C1, D, D1, CE, C1E, DE and D1E
- A medical report D.501 is also required if you answer yes to question 18 - 41 (see Health & Fitness)
- An eyesight report (form D.502) for classes A, A1, A2, B, BE and AM & W - eyesight report valid for one month from Examination.
- Fee - €35
- Two identical passport photographs (signed on back by applicant) Plain White Background only - See section 8 on Guidance Notes (pg 7)
- Any learner permit with a start date on or after the 4th April 2011 must complete the Essential Driver Training before applying for the driving test. Details of this can be found on the RSA website www.rsa.ie

To Apply For A Second Learner Permit You Need The Following:
- Application Form D.201
- Two identical passport photographs (signed on back by applicant) Plain White Background only - See Section 8 on Guidance Notes (pg 7)
- Old Learner Permit (if Learner Permit is lost stolen or destroyed have Garda Declaration completed on page 3 & see Photographic Identity.
- Fee of €35
- If you previously wore glasses or lenses for the purpose of driving and no longer require these please submit an Eye Report - D502.

To Apply For A Third Learner Permit You Need The Following:
- Application Form D.201
- Two identical passport photographs (signed on back by applicant) Plain White Background - See Section 8 on Guidance Notes (pg 7)
- Failure Certificate (valid for two years from date of issue) or a TEST DATE letter in the Category you want to renew the Learner Permit in. The RSA have confirmed that an acknowledgement letter is not sufficient for the purpose of renewing your Learner Permit.
- If Learner Permit is lost, stolen or destroyed see Garda Declaration on page 3 and Photographic identity required.
- Fee of €35
- If you previously wore glasses or lenses for the purpose of driving and no longer require these please submit an Eye Report - D502.

To Apply For A Full Driving Licence You Need The Following:
- Application Form - D401 fully completed and signed by applicant.
- Two identical passport size photographs (signed on back by applicant) Plain White Background - See Section 8 of Guidance Notes (pg9)
- Your current or most recent Driving Licence and/or Learner Permit (If you hold a Learner Permit in a different category this also must be submitted if issued in the last 5 years). In a case where this licence has been lost, stolen, destroyed see Garda Declaration on page 5 & Photographic Identity.
- Appropriate Fee -
- 1 year licence - €25 (Medical Grounds Only)
- 3 year licence - €35 (Age or Medical Grounds only - age 67-69 or Medical Condition)
- 10 year licence - €55 (If the applicant is under 60, they can apply for a 10 year Licence)

Licence up to age 70 - €55 (If the applicant is between the ages of 60 & 66 they can apply for a licence that will expire when they reach the age of 70)
- Changes to Existing Licence/Permits eg. New Category Added - €35
Please note there is no fee for an application to renew a Driving Licence/Learner Permit where the applicant is aged 70 or over.
And, If Required In Your Case:
- Certificate of Competency - if converting from Learner Permit to Full or adding categories to current Driving Licence
- Medical Report for
- categories C1, C, D1, D, C1E, CE, D1E, DE (regardless of age)
- any applicant aged 70 years and over
- If applicant has a Medical Conditions - see page 8 - Health & Fitness
N.B. The Medical Report must be submitted within 1 month of the date of the Medical Examination.
- Original Marriage Certificate/Passport in order to Change Name on Driving Licence through marriage or Original Birth Certificate/Passport to revert to maiden name. Deed Poll Document where applicable. All original documents will be returned to applicant. Passports are returned by Registered Post.
An application for renewal of a Full Driving Licence shall not be made more than 3 months before the date of expiry of the current Full Driving Licence.

- Appropriate Fee €55 for ten year Licence.
- In relation to Higher Categories or Medical Condition see Section 7 - Health & Fitness (pg8) or see "Declaration of signing off categories" on website.
- If you have misplaced the Foreign Licence and are submitting a Letter of Entitlement original Photo ID. eg: Passport is required.
- If you previously wore glasses or lenses for the purpose of driving and no longer require these please submit an Eye Report - D502.
- Where the licence being exchanged is from a country outside the EU you must include an eyesight report D502 with your application.
- Photo Identity must be produced.
