‘A Year in the Making’

The launch of ‘A Year in the Making’ commemorative book and DVD by the Mayor of Kildare Cllr. Martin Miley, took place in Riverbank Arts Centre on Saturday, 14 October 2017 at 7.30 p.m. as part of the Kildare Readers Festival.

The County Kildare Decade of Commemorations Committee has issued the book and DVD to mark the unique commemorations of the centenary of the Easter Rising. The programme of events that took place throughout the county in every village and town; in schools, libraries, and theatres in 2016 in County Kildare was unprecedented. The book contains a list of every event.

The centennial year offered a unique opportunity for exploring and learning the history, heritage and culture of our country. It was important to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising while also creating an archive of research, cultural and artistic material for posterity. Part of creating a legacy was to encourage the production of new material across many different disciplines. County Kildare's role in the period was documented and captured throughout the year in a variety of formats ― books, booklets, music and drama; art, film and social media; historical re-enactment and re-interpretation.

The County Kildare Decade of Commemorations Committee supported, promoted and organised over 272 projects, including 96 school visits interacting with thousands of students; public lectures, exhibitions, publications, seminars, essay and poetry competitions, Proclamation Day ceremonies, plays, and musical performances ― to an approximate audience of 65,000 people.  ‘A Year in the Making’ is filled with photographs that capture the hugh variety of events that took place in 2016.

Throughout the year some of the events were filmed and made available on the Kildare Decade of Commemorations YouTube channel and Facebook.  The ‘A Year in the Making’ DVD is a short compilation of many of these, and includes photographs of other events.  The music and narration on the DVD are from the series of five concerts ‘The Road to Rebellion’ which were held in Athy, Celbridge, Maynooth, Naas, and Newbridge in 2016.
