Celebrating 6 years of Naas Hospital Library Service

Mayor of Kildare, Councillor Michael “Spike” Nolan, andCountyLibrarian, Breda Gleeson, were among those who attended the celebration marking 6 years of the library service to the patients and staff ofNaas GeneralHospital.

Sheila O’Connor of the Friends of Naas Hospital Committee, thanked the Mayor and Breda Gleeson for supporting what seems to be a unique union between the Library Service and the hospital.  “I reckon we are possibly the only hospital who has backing from a council library.  Many groups and families have supported us, but yours is the only on-going support we receive. It makes it all worthwhile when, just as today, a patient called back in to the hospital to say that the service has made a difference and the long and sometimes traumatic hours were made easier by the service we provide.”

The Mayor praised the initiative which began 6 years ago when Friends of Naas Hospital joined with Kildare Library and Arts Service to fill a need for the patients of the local hospital.  “Patients can avail of a wide variety of reading material and audio books, either in the family rooms or from the mobile trolley on the wards.  The findings of a patient survey highlight just how valuable a service this is – a service that helps patients during their stay in the hospital and provides long-term benefits”.  The Mayor reiterated his support for continued funding and man-hours provided by Kildare County Council.

Breda Gleeson congratulated Mayor Nolan on his re-election for another term as Mayor of Kildare and thanked him for his continuing support.  “I would also like to thank the dedicated staff of the Friends of Naas Hospital Committee, particularly Sheila O’Connor and Ger Hogan, and my own staff in the library service, without whose enthusiasm and hard work such ventures would not succeed.”
