Temporary Road Closure - Notice of Decision - R418 Athy and Kilcullen

TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE

ROADS ACT 1993

NOTICE OF DECISION

Kildare County Council gives notice in accordance with Section 75 of the Roads Act 1993 that it will close the following roads:-

The R418 between Athy and Kilcullen and the L6078 from its junction with the R418 to Old Kilcullen. We wish to inform members of the public that a full road closure of the R418 will be in place during the works. A main diversion route and 7 local diversion routes will be put in place along the R418

From Wednesday 22 February until Wednesday 22 August 2012

R418 Main Closure and Diversion Route

The road will be closed south at Ardscull crossroads and north at Whitehall crossroads.

Traffic travelling south on the M9 can stay on the motorway until they are east of Athy where they can take the slip road for the N78 into Athy. Traffic travelling south from Kilcullen on the R418 will be diverted left onto the R448 at Knockaillinne and will cross over the M9 and continue south until it is diverted right onto the N78 into Athy.

Traffic travelling north from Athy will be diverted right onto the N78. Dublin bound traffic will then be diverted onto the M9 north at Mullamast whilst Kilcullen bound traffic will continue along the N78 until the junction with the R448 where it will be diverted left onto the R448 and then travel north over the motorway and back onto the R418 just south of Kilcullen.

(1) The road will be closed south at Rathsillagh crossroads and north at Ballyshannon crossroads for approximately 6 weeks duration from 22 February.

Diversion Route:

Traffic travelling south from Kilcullen will be diverted left at Ballyshannon crossroads along the L8007 to Calverstown. Once in Calverstown traffic will be diverted right, heading south for Narraghmore where it will be diverted right onto the L8016 which will bring traffic back onto the R418 at Rathsillagh.

Traffic travelling north from Athy will be diverted right at the crossroads at Rathsillagh and travel along the L8016 to Narraghmore where they will be diverted left and head north into Calverstown and then divert left again onto the L8007 and rejoin the R418 at Ballyshannon crossroads.

(2) The road will be closed south at Ballyshannon crossroads and north at Hacklow crossroads for approximately 4 weeks duration from 4 April.

Diversion Route:

Traffic travelling south from Kilcullen on the R418 will be diverted left at Hacklow crossroads and continue south along the L8008 to Calverstown where they will be diverted right onto the L8007 and continue east onto the R418 at Ballyshannon crossroads.

Traffic travelling north along the R418 will be diverted right at Ballyshannon crossroads onto the L8007 and continue on into Calverstown where they will be diverted left onto the L8008 and continue north onto the R418 at Hacklow crossroads.

(3) The road will be closed from Hacklow crossroads to Whitehall crossroads for approximately 2 weeks from 16 May.

Diversion Route:

Traffic travelling south from Kilcullen will be diverted left off the R418 at the junction with the R448. Continue south on the R448 as far as Kilgowan crossroads where traffic will be diverted right onto the L6090. From there traffic will continue west entering Calverstown where traffic will be diverted right onto the L8008 which will return onto the R418 at Hacklow crossroads.

Traffic travelling north on the R418 will be diverted right at Hacklow crossroads onto the L8008 and on into Calverstown where traffic will be diverted left onto the L6090. Continue east to Kilgowan crossroads and turn left onto the R448 heading north and return back onto the R418.

(4) The L6078 will be closed from its junction with the R418 to Old Kilcullen for approximately 2 weeks from 30 May.

Diversion Route

Traffic trying to enter onto the road from the R418 will be diverted north to the junction with the R448 where it will be diverted right onto the R448 and travel south as far as the eastern side of the L6078.

Traffic trying to enter the L6078 from the eastern side will be diverted north to where it will be diverted left onto the R418 and then continue south as far as Whitehall crossroads.

(5) The road will be closed south at Rathsillagh and north at Ballyshannon crossroads for approximately 4 weeks from 13 June.

Diversion Route:

Traffic travelling south from Kilcullen will be diverted left at Ballyshannon crossroads along the L8007 to Calverstown. Once in Calverstown traffic will be diverted right, heading south for Narraghmore where it will be diverted right onto the L8016 which will bring traffic back onto the R418 at Rathsillagh.

Traffic travelling north from Athy will be diverted right at the crossroads at Rathsillagh and travel along the L8016 to Narraghmore where they will be diverted left and head north into Calverstown and then divert left again onto the L8007 and rejoin the R418 at Ballyshannon crossroads.

(6) The road will be closed south at Fontstown crossroads and north at Rathsillagh for approximately 2 weeks from 11 July.

Diversion Route:

Traffic travelling south from Kilcullen is diverted left at Rathsillagh onto the L8016 which goes east into Narraghmore where traffic will be diverted right onto the L8019 and continue south as far as Cuckels crossroads where traffic will be diverted right onto the R415 and returns back to the R418 at Fontstown crossroads.

Traffic travelling north from Athy will be diverted right at Fontstown crossroads onto the R415 as far as Cuckels crossroads where traffic will then be diverted left onto the L8019 on into Narraghmore where it will again be diverted left onto the L8016 and return back to the R418 at Rathsillagh.

(7) The road will be closed south at Russelstown crossroads and north at Fontstown crossroads for approximately 4 weeks from 25 July.

Diversion Route:

Traffic travelling south on the R418 from Kilcullen will be diverted right at Fontstown crossroads onto the R415 as far as Boley crossroads where traffic will then be diverted left onto the L8005 heading south for Athy. Traffic will be diverted straight along this road through Dillons crossroads and Skerries crossroads as far as Geraldine crossroads where it will be diverted left onto the L8067 and return to the R418 at Russeltown crossroads.

Traffic travelling north from Athy will be diverted left at Russeltown crossroads onto the L8067, then right at Geraldine crossroads onto the L8005 and then north as far as Boley crossroads where it will be diverted right onto the R415 and then back onto the R418 at Fontstown crossroads.

The road closure is required to facilitate pipe laying as part of the Kildare Water Strategy Contract 3a. Diversionary routes will be clearly signposted as agreed with the Council and AN Garda Síochána and will be in place for the duration of the works. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times. Any inconvenience caused is regretted.
