Annual Summer Reading Challenge 2012

Kildare Library and Arts Service

Annual Summer Reading Challenge 2012

This summer, children aged 4 to 11 are being invited by Kildare Library and Arts Service to read six books over the course of the summer holiday. Children who join, will receive their own 3D lab model where they can keep track of their progress. As they read they can collect stickers, a medal and certificate if six books are read - which will give them a real sense of achievement. Each year the Summer Reading Challenge has a different theme. The 2012 theme is 'Story Lab' - a celebration of story and the imagination. Participants can also take part in activities on the Story Lab website which will be packed with games and activities to keep them busy.

How children benefit from taking part in the annual Summer Reading Challenge

The combination of fun, freedom, and creativity impacts significantly on children's reading levels, range, motivation and confidence. Taking part helps prevent the 'summer reading dip' in achievement, when children without book/reading opportunities at home, over the long summer break from school, traditionally lose ground in their reading. For many children it's a fun opportunity to make a connection with books that last all summer long - and many years beyond.

How do I sign my child up?
Just head to your local library at the beginning of the summer holidays. Staff will enrol your child - it's completely free of charge - and every child will receive a membership card and 3D lab model.

What books can my children read?
The Summer Reading Challenge is designed for children of all ages and reading abilities. They can read any books they like - fact books, stories, joke books, picture books - it's up to them. Audio books count too! As long as you're borrowing them from the library, they all count.

It's a win-win situation!!!

While your children choose books and collect their well earned stickers, you can see what's going on in the adult library, and select some books for yourself too. Libraries in Kildare will be busy this summer with xbox karoke, art workshops, creative writing workshops, nutritional talks, book/film clubs and Heritage Week 18th - 25th August and much more for you to enjoy.

Children love to copy adults. So a great way to encourage your child to read is to let them see you making time to read. Once they start copying you, they'll soon get the habit!

For more information and to locate your local library in Kildare go to our website at or phone 045 431109.

So what are you waiting for? Get down to your local library and join the Summer Reading Challenge.....

We look forward to seeing you then.
