Press Statement

Opening of Pedestrian Bridge at Station Road, Newbridge

Kildare County Council is pleased to announce that the new pedestrian bridge onStation Road, Newbridge will be officially opened by the Mayor of Kildare, Councillor Micheál “Spike” Nolan on Friday, 29 June 2009 at 11am.

The construction of this bridge has been an objective for both Kildare County Council and Newbridge Town Council for many years and it is expected that the pedestrian bridge, together with the other improvement works onStation Road, will greatly improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists using this road and Newbridge Railway Station.

It would not have been possible for Kildare County Council to deliver this scheme without the assistance of Irish Rail. This is a project that has been delivered through co-operation and partnership.

Irish Rail progressed this project through detailed design, procurement and construction, with Kildare County Council contributing funding of €800,000 towards the works.

The increased numbers of people walking and cycling to and from the town and the railway station, travelling to the new school and to the numerous excellent sporting facilities in this area, meant that the delivery of this project was a key priority for both the council and Irish Rail.

The Council has also completed pitch relocation works for Newbridge Town Football Club and road improvement works on theStation Road, with the new traffic lights to be activated in July.

Kildare County Council wishes to acknowledge the co-operation of Irish Rail, the OPW and the Department of Defence in the delivery of this project.
