Press Release - Naas Slí na Sláinte Routes

Press Release

12th June 2013

Three new Irish Heart Foundation Slí na Sláinte walking routes were launched on Wednesday June 12th in Naas Town. Slí na Sláinte (“Path to Health”) is a unique Health Promotion initiative of the Irish Heart Foundation designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to walk for health and leisure. The new Slí na Sláinte routes are located in at Naas Lakes, 1.6km, Monread Park, 2.4km and the Naas Ring Road, 10km.

The new Slí na Sláinte routes were launched by the unveiling of the map board for the 10k at the K-Leisure/ Sports Centre Car Park on the Caragh Rd by Mayor of Naas, Willie Callaghan, followed by a walk along the route and the public were invited and encouraged to join in.

Edel Byrne from the Irish Heart Foundation said: “We hope that the community in Naas will get great enjoyment and benefit from the new Slí na Sláinte routes. Getting active makes such a big difference to your heart and overall health, helping to reduce stress, ease back pain and reduce the risk of heart disease. For heart health, adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity, such as brisk walking, five days a week. By having a clearly marked and safe walking route, we aim to make it easier for people in Naas to get active as part of their normal day.”

Mayor Willie Callaghan said: “ Walking is one of the best forms of physical activity and it is great that the Irish Heart Foundation, Naas Town Council, Kildare Sports Partnership, and the HSE have teamed up to develop these walking routes. These routes will assist local people in making a commitment to their health and well-being and will hopefully put them on the pathway to long life and happiness.”

Syl Merrins, Coordinator of Kildare Sports Partnership, thanked all involved in making the three Slí Na Slainte routes a reality. He also thanked Naas Town Engineer David Reel for his help and enthusiasm for the project.
