Arthur’s Way- On Two Wheels

The Mayor of Kildare, Councillor Fiona O’Loughlin, Deputy Emmet Stagg, local councillors and officials welcomed Minister Alan Kelly to Kildare on 17th June to view part of Arthur’s Way at the Grand Canal near Ardclough.  The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport recently announced that €311,000 in funding will be granted for the development of Arthur’s Way as a cycling route (Phase 2) in addition to the walking route which is currently under development.

Kildare Fáilte originally came up with the concept of a trail centred on Arthur Guinness linking Leixlip, Celbridge and Oughterard; places closely associated with the famous family of brewers.  With the support of the Leader programme and Kildare County Council, Kildare Fáilte is developing paper copy and web based resources for both national and international travellers.  The trail will concentrate on active modes ie walking and cycling, and, as it is only a short journey from Dublin City, it is hoped that the trail will give a large boost to the number of day trippers from the capital as well as local users.

A spokesman for Kildare Fáilte said ‘The funding is designed to encourage people to get out, get active and see a beautiful part of north Kildare.  Arthur Guinness is associated with brewing and alcohol but we hope that having travelled Arthur’s Way people will realise that there is a lot more to the man’.
