Press Release - Ireland's Best Kept Large Town

Ireland’s Best Kept Large Town for 2014 is Maynooth in County Kildare

All Ireland winners were announced at an awards ceremony on the SS Nomadic in the Titanic Quarter, Belfast on Tuesday, 24 June 2014.

Emly, Co Tipperary won the Best Kept Village category. Hillsborough, Co Down won the Best Kept Small Town category. Maynooth, Co Kildare won the Best Kept Large Town category and Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh won the Best Kept Large Urban Centre category.

The Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government and the Northern Ireland Amenity Council initiated the Ireland’s Best Kept Towns competition in 1995 to help raise the profile of both the Tidy Towns and Northern Ireland’s Best Kept competitions, and so help to improve the standard of towns and villages across the island of Ireland.

All entrants were marked against strict adjudication criteria that included cleanliness, the outward appearance of buildings, the presentation of roads and public facilities and the natural environment.

The Mayor of Kildare, Councillor Fiona O’Loughin, said, “I am delighted to hear that Maynooth has won such a prestigious award and wish to congratulate all the people of Maynooth who have been involved in attaining such a high standard for their town. It is a fantastic achievement. I have no doubt that this will spur on other towns and villages in the county who are already highly commended for their Tidy Towns work”.
