Press release - severe weather alert

Severe Weather Alert

Met Éireann has issued a weather advisory indicating that we are facing a very unusual, extremely cold period with precipitation, including snow, affecting the East and South East of the country.  Extremely low temperatures, possibly as low -9 degrees Celsius, are expected from Sunday evening next 25 February. From next Tuesday night, 27 February 2018 sustained, very cold conditions, possibly only rising to 0 degrees in daytime are being indicated. These conditions will persist until Friday 2 March at least and may extend further.

Snowfalls of at least 5cms per day are expected in Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford and the wider Leinster area, including Kildare. Conditions will be made even more difficult by the fact that the snow will be falling during freezing conditions.

As the situation becomes clearer, Met Éireann will issue weather warnings with predicated levels of snowfall.

This weather event is likely to have significant and disruptive impact on the public transport network, the education sector may be affected also. There may also be some disruption to water infrastructure, including waste water infrastructure, although it is difficult to fully assess impacts at this time.

Kildare County Council's Severe Weather Assessment Team have analysed the current information available and are scheduled to meet on Monday morning to assess the situation.

Kildare County Council Road Crews, Fire Service and Civil Defence teams are on alert and ready to respond.

The Peter McVerry Trust, on behalf of Kildare County Council will be putting the Cold Weather Initiative for the county into operation to provide shelter for people sleeping rough during the severe weather conditions and the Freephone Number for this service is 1800 804 307.

Further updates will be published on our website, Facebook and Twitter.
