Co.Kildare Federation of Local History Groups

AGM & Seminar

Each year the Federation holds a seminar to coincide with its AGM. Notable key speakers present illustrated talks on historical events which are often topical due to anniversaries.

The guest speaker for this year's seminar was Adhamhnán O Súilleabháin, who wrote the first biography of his grandfather Domhnall Ua Buachalla. A cultural nationalist, Gaelic Leaguer and friend of Pádraig Pearse, Domhnall Ua Buachalla became an Irish Volunteer leader in North Kildare organising and arming the Maynooth rebels before marching to the GPO on Easter Monday 1916.

Adhamhnán O Súilleabháin introduced all in attendance with the fascinating history of one man’s courage and the journey from rebel to the last Governor General Of Ireland, a role he took to wind down the office.

Adhamhnán not only gave a history of is grandfather's involvement in the national struggle but also recalled some personal memories of the man.

A feature of the annual meeting is the 'society speak', where members of the various groups give an outline of their activities throughout the year.
