Moon & Sixpence produce first CD

KILCULLEN & NEWBRIDGE, 1 July 2002: by Bill Trapman. A 60s-style pop group formed by five mid-Kildare people a number of years ago (well, MANY years ago!), have just released their first CD. And because it took them more than six years to complete it, they’ve called it ‘Better Late than Never’.

“There were times when it seemed the CD project was just our long-term excuse to get together on a semi-regular basis,” says Kilcullen-born businessman Byrne, a founder member of The Moon and Sixpence, whose other members are solicitor John Reidy, airline pilot Henry Donohoe, restaurant owner Siobhan Hurley - all from Newbridge - and Kilcullen-born doctor Michael O’Connell.

The raison d’etre for the Moon and Sixpence was originally to maintain the interest in music which the band members have long shared. But they do perform in public around half a dozen times a year, in charity and community gigs run by a number of different organisations and individuals.

‘Better Late than Never’ will be on sale at their gigs, at the XL Shop in Kilcullen, An Cistin in George’s St in Newbridge, and in a number of other local outlets soon. Proceeds will be donated to helping the homeless in County Kildare.

Though Michael O'Connell has been a prolific songwriter for many years, all but one of the songs performed on the CD are covers of some of the most popular songs of the 60s.
