Class Visits

Following many successful years of the Kildare Schools Library Service, the funding for library services to schools from the Department of Education and Science ceased in 2008. Unfortunately, this has resulted in the closure of our dedicated Schools Library Service showroom and office.

However, since then Kildare Library Service continues to support primary schools through the network of community libraries by facilitating block loans for teachers, class visits and class-sets lending.

As part of our new Scheduled Time service, class visits form an intrinsic part of our libraries programme. Scheduled Time operates in the mornings and provides a dedicated time for local schools to visit their library. Staff will give a guided tour and show the children how they go about using the library service. In these days of the Internet age very often the first and only information is sought on the web. Libraries provide other sources and will help to develop research skills.

The library will be introduced as a resource, a place to relax and entertain oneself and somewhere to do homework or study. Reading opens a whole new world to the young child and developing the ‘reading habit’ with regular visits to the library will help build the foundation for future learning.

Block Loan

While we encourage children to become members and have their own library card, we also offer primary school teachers a block loan library card where they can borrow up to 40 items at any one time. This can be useful for a class project or when the class is studying a certain topic. There is no charge for a block loan card and to apply for one enquire with staff at the circulation desk. The teacher is responsible for the loaned items and we advise that they are kept in the classroom.

Class Sets

Kildare County Library Service offers a unique service to local primary schools.

We have developed a collection of class set titles for children in primary school.

Each set comprises of a maximum 35 copies of each title and can be borrowed for a period of 6 weeks. These sets are available for loan on a teacher’s block loan ticket.
