Also presented on the day was ‘Home: Portraits from Clocha Rince’, an exhibition of portraits by artist Christopher Banahan, of residents in Ard Carraig Housing Development.

The ‘red ribbon’ was cut and the Community Library officially launched by Mr. Michael Kitt, TD, Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.

Speaking to a packed school hall, the Minister praised how Clocha Rince National School has functioned at the heart of the community for the past 20 years, and engaged in all manner of partnered programmes with Kildare County Council.

I am especially delighted to learn that, although only open a few weeks, Clocha Rince Library already has 419 members – representing the whole community from children to senior citizens”,

said Minister Kitt.

Mr Frank O’Meara (School Principal) speaking after the Minister, outlined the origins of a unique initiative fostered by both himself and Breda Gleeson (County Librarian) to house the first ever Community Library within a National School.

This novel, far-seeing project means multi-usage of resources for the benefit of the wider community and the school community, let us continue to use it to ensure we don’t lose it!”

said Mr O’Meara

Kildare Library & Arts Services presented Mr O’Meara with a print “A Wise Woman Told us Tales of our Future” by Aaron Ross, as used on the launch invitation.  Clocha Rince Orchestra closed proceedings with a rousing recital of the Red Stone Jive.
