New Library Management System

Kildare Library Service News Update - Summer 2015

Arising from Opportunities for All, the National Strategy for Public Libraries,  Kildare County Council Library Service is delighted to inform you that we will pilot the introduction of a new national library computerised system - Sierra.   The strategy advocates shared services and co-operation between County Council Library Authorities which will lead to a new era in the delivery of library services in Ireland.

The 6 library authorities - Kildare, Wexford, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, South Dublin and Dublin City (project leaders) will pilot the rollout of Sierra, which went live on 23rd June 2015.

All public library authorities in Ireland will gradually move onto the new shared system by 2017, which will allow standardisation of library service, i.e. all patrons will be able to borrow 12 items, fines will be at a rate of 30c per week or part thereof, common loan periods and free membership for all patrons.

The benefits of this system will also include:

  • shared national catalogue
  • universal membership card - patrons in the future will be able to use their card in any public library
  • free membership for all patrons
  • standardisation of library services
  • inter library lending
  • user friendly patron interface

As this is a major project, we would like to advise you that there will be scheduled downtime for our online catalogue and possible disruption of ancillary services such as printing, WiFi, PC booking, self-service, some online services and access to your online account.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience as we complete the installation of this new system.

In this transition period there will be a temporary fines amnesty, covering the period 20th June to 13th July 2015.
