Teen Spaces in Kildare Library Services:

Kildare Library and Arts Services are in the process of developing a programme of cultural and arts events for teenagers in libraries throughout Kildare.

However, work has already begun on creating appropriate and dedicated 'Teen Zone' in many of our libraries countywide.

The First Teen Zone:

The need for such provision was firstly identified in preparation of building the new Leixlip Community Library in 2005. Respondents to a survey at that time identified the strong need of appropriate space for young people aged 13 - 18 years (making up almost a third of the population in Leixlip) to 'hang out', study, access IT services and engage with cultural and arts programming. The design of Leixlip Community Library reflected this feedback and is now widely accessed and utilised by the youth of Leixlip.

A hugely successful recording studio called the Platform4 Recording Project @ Leixlip was installed and launched in 2009 and is operated by Kildare County Council Arts Service with programmes available for teenagers and young people throughout the county. Recent Teen Zones:

Building on such positive experiences, Kildare Library and Arts Services have continued to install a dedicated 'Teen Zone' in each new library as space and the capital programme have allowed. To see some examples please visit the picture galleries below.
