Be a Responsible Dog Owner This Christmas

Be a Responsible Dog Owner This Christmas

County Kildare Dog Warden Service

Each year Kildare County Council’s Dog Warden Service receives a high number of surrender requests for unwanted dogs. The Council is urging people to think about the lifelong commitment and responsibility that comes with owning a dog. It is often better to wait until after Christmas to consider taking on a new addition to your family.

Choose a dog that is right for you and your circumstances. Different breeds and ages of dog have different requirements in relation to exercise, space, food, grooming, veterinary attention etc.

Whether you already own a dog or are considering getting one, consider the following points :

  • Vaccinate your dog and don’t forget a booster vaccination every year;
  • Worm your dog regularly. This will prevent worms which can cause disease in both dogs and humans (particularly young children);
  • Buy a dog licence and renew it annually online at www.licences.ie or any Post Office;
  • Have your dog neutered (whether male or female) if you do not intend to breed from it. Some veterinary practices operate a subsidised scheme;
  • Ensure your dog gets appropriate daily exercise;
  • Ensure your dog has appropriate shelter, is fed appropriately and that clean water is always available.;
  • Keep your dog under control at all times; and ensure your dog has a collar with your name and telephone number on it.
