Set against the background of the Irish Civil War and the Labour Movement in a two-roomed tenancy of the Boyle family in a tenement house in Dublin, Sean O'Casey's great classic play, directed by Maire Murphy, weaves a wonderful balance between tragedy and comedy.

The play focuses on the lives of the Boyle family: the poseur "Captain" Jack Boyle, who prefers a bottle of porter to a day's work even if it means his family will go hungry:his heroic, long-suffering wife Juno; their son Johnny, who is physically and emotionally maimed fighting for Ireland's independence; their daughter Mary, who represents the new generation and wants to lift herself out of the poverty trap.We also meet a number of fellow tenants of the house including Joxer Daly, Boyle's cunning side-kick. O'Casey's strong complex characters dominate the play throughout.

We love, we hate, we laugh at, with, and against the characters, but always, we feel for and empathise with O'Casey's richly colourful and indomitable characters.
