Dir: George Pollock / Ireland / UK  / 1958 / 88mins / Cert: CLUBStarring: John Gregson, Muriel Pavlow, Barry Fitzgerald, Marie Kean, Noel Purcell, June Thorburn, Liam Redmond.

Rooney is a famous 1950s Irish comedy which follows the story of a Dubin binman as he attempts to earn an All Ireland Hurling medal. John Gregson goes at the title role of the happy young bachelor dustman with a lively good nature and comic will. Whether he is dodging a widow's clutches or racing healthily down a hurling field, Rooney does it in the spirit of fun.

With comic scenes starring Noel Purcell, Eddie Byrne, Philip O'Flynn and Jack MacGowran as Rooney's fellow dustmen, and authentic footage of the 1957 All-Ireland Final between Kilkenny and Waterford, Rooney provides a fascinating picture of pre-Sixties Dublin.

Ringey (9.30pm)

Ringey, directed by Tony McCarthy, looks back on the life and career of the unique sportsman, Christy Ring. Christy Ring is regarded as Ireland’s greatest ever hurler. Throughout his long career he won eight All Ireland medals and four National Leagues with Cork, 18 Railway Cups with Munster and 14 County Championship medals with Glen Rovers. This film pays tribute to the man and his excellent contribution to Irish sport.

An event not to be missed by sport and film lovers alike, this special night celebrates 125 years of GAA with two outstanding Irish films.
