Emma Roche was born in Dublin in 1983 and currently lives and works in Co. Wexford. She holds an MA in Visual Arts Practices (MAVIS) from IADT and a BA in Fine Art Painting from the National College of Art and Design.

She has shown widely in Ireland and the UK and has been awarded artist residencies in Iceland and India.

Emma’s paintings marry many processes borrowed from craft, sculpture, text, drawing and performance. Notions of deconstruction of materials and their consequent reconstruction have become a foundation for the work. Alchemical explorations of materials are apparent where boundaries are underlined or tested. They pose questions, not only on a formal or figurative level, but also attempt to encourage a dialogue.

Refusenik qualities often appear in the titles and processes that Roche uses and an innate questioning of how labels are used within both the ‘art world’ and the ‘general public’ is often present.
