An array of superlatives has been used to describe this musical duo, performing at the Riverbank Arts Centre on Friday 4th April at 8.00 pm.

From ‘Virtuosic, fascinating, dramatic, original, and inspired’, to “gloriously adventurous, dazzling, brilliant, stunning, impassioned, electrifying and bewitching.” The Irish Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Scotsman, Folk Roots….and many others have sung their praises.

The celebrated virtuoso partnership of Máire Ní Chathasaigh and Chris Newman has toured worldwide since its 1987 début. Máire has been described as “the most interesting & original player of the Irish harp today” and Chris “one of the UK’s most staggering & influential acoustic guitarists” was Irish Traditional Musician of the Year 2001.

In 1985 Máire recorded the first harp album ever to concentrate on traditional Irish dance music, The New-Strung Harp. The techniques which she invented for the purpose have been profoundly influential. The prestigious Gradam Cheoil TG4, the Irish-language TV station’s Award for Traditional Musician of the Year, was presented to her in 2001 “for the excellence & pioneering force of her music, the remarkable growth she has brought to the music of the harp & for the positive influence she has had on the young generation of harpers”.

Rooted in the Irish tradition, Chris and Máire’s performance on “blazing guitar & dancing harp” (Dirty Linen) is a breathtaking blend of traditional Irish music, hot jazz, bluegrass & baroque, coupled with Máire’s “clear, warm & expressive voice” & Chris’s “subversively witty introductions”. Their fifth critically-acclaimed duo album Dialogues is “Terrific: brilliant, beautiful, rich, virtuosic, delightful, classic, perfect!” This is a concert not to be missed by anyone with an interest in good music.
