Athy Twinning Committee have arranged a special course in French Conversation, for the local families who will be hosting visitors from Grandvilliers in March for the ‘Year of the French Festival'. The classes will start on Thursday January 20 th . in Athy Community College at
7.30 p.m. and continue every Thursday for the next 8 weeks. This will be simple basic French conversation. It will be the equivalent in French of the ‘Cupla Focal'.If you would like to join, contact the College direct to sign on.
Tom Yates is arranging accommodation and there are still opportunities to offer a room for the occasion. Then you can travel on the next Athy visit to Grandvilliers.
Many of the visitors have some English, but it will be nice to at least greet them in French and to be able to explain things with the word in French of the subject of a conversation. It will be even more useful should you decide to visit France as it will take the '‘fear' of not being able to make yourself understood in a foreign country.
Fifty or more visitors from Grandvilliers, which is about 60 miles north of Paris with a population of 3,000 will be coming to Athy on March 16 th and staying for six days.
On the Saturday evening the second and final signing of the Twinning Charter by the Cathaoirleach of Athy and the Mayor of Grandvilliers will be take place at a public event in Emily Square.
The Year of the French Festival will be held to coincide with the visit and a programme of events is being arranged. Clubs and Associations who would like to Host an event, should contact Helen Dowling at 05986 31444.
