The Curragh Chess Club meets every Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Watertower Conference Facility (beside Watertower). New players are always welcome.

The Junior Club meets every Sunday from 11 a.m. -12.30 p.m. Beginners are always welcome.

Going into the Christmas break, the Curragh have managed to move up the table and are still in with a chance of promotion:

The Curragh have had a reasonable start to the season with 13.5/32 after four rounds against some of the stronger teams in the league.

After a poor first round, Curragh had an excellent second round win over Phibsboro and are on 11/18 after three rounds.

Heidenfeld Trophy (Division 2) 2010/11

The Curragh finished in fourth place following completion of the final round in the Teachers Club, Parnell Square on Sunday 13 March 2011. The Curragh scored a solid 5-3 win over Lucan in the last round which made up for the poor result in the previous round when Curagh lost 7-1 to Inchicore. Elm Mount and Celbridge were promoted and Drogheda and St. Benildus were relegated

O'Hanlon Cup (Division 4) 2010/11

Curragh finished the season in a very respectable 3rd place but unfortunately well behind the two promoted teams. The team put in some good performances and will be hopeful of promition next season.

The Curragh defeated Drogheda 6.5-1.5 to remain in contention near the top of the table.

The Curragh suffered a comprehensive defeat to table top team Celbridge 2.5-5.5 with Richard's win on Board 1 the only highlight.

The Curragh defeated the top team of the League with a 3.5-2.5 win over Kilkenny. Very good results For Franco and Brendan on the top boards and a good draw for Dermot on Board 3.

Heidenfeld -Division 2 - Round 7

The Curragh defeated Tallaght 5.5-2.5 to remain in contention near the top of the table.

The Curragh scored a solid 6-2 vixtory over Kilkenny.

Heidenfeld (Division 2) Round 4 - 2010/11

The Curragh lost 3-5 to a strong Elm Mount side at the Ierne Club off Grace Park Road in Round 4 of the league.

Heidenfeld - Division 2 2010/11 - Round 3

The Curragh lost 3.5-4.5 to Balbriggan in Round 3 of the league. The match could have gone either way with Pearse sacrificing a rook for a winning position and blundering a second piece to lose. Harijs, short on time offered his opponent a draw only to win a move later after a blunder by his opponent.

The Curragh defeated Bray/Greystones 4.5-3.5 in Round 2 of the league.

O'Hanlon Cup (Div 4) Round 1 - 2010/11

Curragh suffered a 1.5-4.5 defeat in their first game of the season against Elm Mount.

Heidenfeld - Division 2 - Round 1 - 2010/11

The Curragh commenced the new season with a solid 6.5-1.5 win over newly promoted St. Benildus.

How to lose a rook in 9 moves.....   Black to move (me) misses a simple threat to the rook.

Leinster Leagues 2009/10 Summary

The last round of the League was held in Bray on 14 March and the Curragh scored a very good 5.5-2.5 win against Phibsboro leaving the team in a very respectable fourth place overall for the season. Best result was by Mark McLoughlin who scored of 8.5/11 and wins a board prize.

The Hanlon Cup Team finished the season with a 4-2 win also against Phibsboro and a very respectable fourth place in the league. Franco Rivera was the top player with 6.5/10 for the season. The team used 11 players during the season captained by Dermot Earls.

B Norris v M McLoughlin  In the following position, white has just played f3 attacking the knight. Black came up with a novel way of relieving the pressure and keeping in the game.

Curragh v Malahide (25 September 2009)

Curragh kicked off the new season with a 3.5-4.5 defeat to a strong Malahide team with some very strong performances.

30th Anniversary 1979 - 2009

The Curragh Chess Club recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. The club was founded in May 1979 and this was celebrated at the Annual General Meeting held on Thursday 28 May.

The Curragh Club championship was won by Noel Lynch for the second year in a row and he was presented with the Billy O'Connor Perpetual Trophy by Billy O'Connor himself, a founding member of the club.

Heidenfeld Trophy Division 2: The team finished in 8th place and retain their position in this division.

O'Hanlon Cup - Division 4:  The team finished in 11th place and were relegated. Presently waiting the outcome of an appeal.

Branagan Cup (For Div 1 & 2 Teams): Team knocked out by Elm Mount in Round 1.

William Brennan Trophy (For players rated under 1500): Defeated 3-2 in Semi-Final by Wicklow Chess Club.

Killane Shield (For Div 3-6 Teams): Defeated in Round 2.

2009/10 Season

Heidenfeld Cup - Division 2 - Round 10 Curragh v Rathmines (28 February 2009)

Curragh travelled to Rathmines and scored a 4.5-3.5 win which ensures Division 2 status next year.

Curragh are on 32.5 points after 10 rounds (including a bye) with Elm Mount B, Lucan and Wicklow behind with only one team being relegated. Last round of the leagues takes place on Sunday 8 March.

Curragh v Portmarnock (28 February 2009)

Curragh were unlucky to lose 2-4 against Portmarnock. Franco Rivera made a welcome return to the team.

After 10 rounds, Curragh are on 24/60. Bray/Greystones suffered a 6-0 deafeat and so are behind on 23.5 points with either Curragh or Bray/Greystones most likely to be relegated. The Curragh need to match their result in the last round to guarantee survival.

Curragh v Phibsboro (22 November 2008)

Curragh lost 3-5 to a much stronger Phibsboro side. Curragh had a bye in Round 4 so the match played in the An Oige Youth Hostel in Phibsboro was the first in a month. Some good results on the lower boards gave the Curragh a few points. Noel sacrificed a piece and was very close to getting a good result.

Curragh drew 4-4 with Kilkenny. Richard had to sit it out as his opponent never showed. I blundered on board 3. Brendan had a good draw. Good wins for Derek and Martin.

Curragh v Inchicore (20 September 2008)

The season has started with a 3.5-4.5 defeat to Inchicore, the same result as last season. Noel Lynch was last to finish and saved the day with a good win.

The controller has also advised that one team has withdrawn reducing the number of teams to 11 this season. Fixtures at www.chessleague.net

Heidenfeld - Division 2 - Round 11

Curragh v Kilkenny 

The last round of the league for all teams was held in Inchicore. Curragh scored a respectable 3.5-4.5 loss against Kilkenny to finish the season in fourth place out of twelve teams. Richard Arundell and Niall O'Shea won with Mark McLoughlin, Noel Lynch and Peter Klompers drawing.

Other players were Brendan Duffy, Franco Rivera and Billy O'Connor.

O'Hanlon Cup - Division 4 - Round 11

 Curragh scored a very respectable 3-3 draw with top of the league side Phibsboro to finish the season on a high and deprive Phibsboro of the title.

This year's team were Derek Stacey, Dermot Earls, Michael Kennedy, Bryan Tobin, Derek Meade and Leo Talbot and Marek Piecewicz.

Curragh v Drogheda

Drogheda, for various reasons, were unable to field a full team for the second time this season. Brendan played his game last week and drew, however, the defaults on the higher boards, unfortunately for Drogheda will mean that no point is scored for this game. THe result on the day was 7.5-0.5.

 After 8 rounds, Curragh are now on 37.5 points and looks like we are in contention for a third place finish in the League.

In the Kildare derby, Curragh defeated Celbridge 4.5-3.5 to finish the pre-Christmas schedule strongly. A few more good performaces from the Curragh who were again well outrated by their opponents.

Curragh took on a weakened Malahide 'A' side, the current league leaders and held them to a 4-4 draw. Good results on Boards, 4, 5 and 6.

Niall O'Shea v Cormac Roche

Black has sacrificed material for a strong attack. White now plays 30. Bd3 threatening the Knight with a potentially fatal attack on the King and Queen. 

Instead for Black, 30 .... Nh4 protected from the Bishop atack with strong mating chances.

Curragh suffered a 2.5-3.5 defeat to Bray/Greystones.

Bryan Tobin playing black was a pawn up was the victim of a clever trick from  his opponent.

Black's only chance after Nf7+ was RxN with a good bishop and drawing chances.

Curragh put up a good fight but were beaten 2.5-5.5 against a very strong team. Very good results on the top boards!

This is the position reached between Mark McLoughlin (Black) and Eric Bennett (White). Black now plays  NxN. White had a choice between recapturing with the rook or pawn. Which would you choose?

White played PxN. Black plays Qc5+ winning the rook and white resigned!

Leinster League Season Summary 2006-07

The Leinster League 2006/07 season came to a close on Sunday, 25th March 2007 hosted by Inchicore chess club at the ungodly hour of 10 a.m.  Both of Curragh's teams were in action in Division 2 and Division 4 and maintained their positions in in their respective divisions:

Heidenfeld - Division 2 - 2006/07

Curragh lost to Kilkenny 3.5-4.5 in the last round which gave us enough points to see the team finish a very respectable eight overall in a league of 12 teams with Lucan, Malahide B, Tallaght and Rathmines B behind the Curragh. The division was won by Rathmines A whom the Curragh has held to a 4-4 draw earlier in the season. Also promoted was Phibsboro.

Final Standings:

Best season performances for the Curragh who were heavily outrated in every game of the season were Derek Stacey (5.5/11) and Richard Arundell (5.5/11). Other team members were Mark McLoughlin, Noel Lynch, Peter Klompers, Billy O'Connor, Brendan Duffy, Franco Rivera and Michael Kennedy.

O'Hanlon Cup - Division 4 - 2006/07

In a dramatic last round turn around the Curragh needed a draw from Longford to ensure they stayed in the division in their first season in Divison 4. Team captain Dermot Earls and Niall O'Shea secured victories against opponents rated over 200 points higher and with Derek Meade putting in a solid performance on the bottom board, the team ensured their future for next year with a 3-3 draw.  The team's best performers were Niall O'Shea (7/10) and Derek Meade (4/5).   Other players captained by Dermot Earls were Maurice Canavan, Hugues Hammouma, Charlie Talbot, Leo Talbot, Michael Kennedy and Oskar Knapik. 

The team was never without controversy and team captain Dermot had a baptism of fire having to survive two appeals to the league controller!

Leinster Leagues Update

Heidenfeld - Division 2 - 2006/07

The Curragh were defeated 2.5-5.5 by a strong Elm Mount side in Round 7 of the League. After 7 rounds, the Curragh look strong enough to remain in Division 2 in our first season after promotion last year - a few tough battles ahead.  

Bottom boards Derek Stacey and Franco Rivera have performed well against strong opposition to keep the team in the League. With games against Rathmines B and Lucan still to come, the Curragh's destiny is in their own hands.....

Other team members are Richard Arundell, Mark McLoughlin, Noel Lynch, Billy O'Connor, Peter Klompers and Brendan Duffy.

O'Hanlon Cup - Division 4 - 2006/07

The Curragh's second team under the guidance of Dermot Earls are in a fight for survival in their first season in Division 4. A good 3.5-2.5 win against Drogheda last Saturday gives some hope that the team might be able to survive with only 4 rounds to go.

Newcomer Derek Meade got off to a winning start in the last round and Niall O'Shea prevailed in a tense time scramble to gain the points. This one will go down to the wire!  Other team members are Mossy Canavan, Charlie Talbot and Leo Talbot.

 The Curragh Chess Club will  reopen on Thursday 7th September  2006  in the Curragh Branch Library. The club premises are located opposite the Curragh Fire Station. The club opens from 8 p.m. and newcomers are very welcome!

This season, the club will be entering teams in the Heidenfeld Trophy ( Division 2) and the O'Hanlon Cup (Division 4) of the Leinster Leagues.

The leagues commence on Saturday 7th October when both teams will be away to Phibsboro Chess Club followed by a Division 2 match against Rathmines at home on Saturday 14th October and a Division 4 match also home against Rathmines on Saturday 21st October.

The Curragh have won promotion to the Heidenfeld Trophy (Division 2) with their first ever victory in the Ennis Shield. It follows on from promotion from the O'Hanlon Cup two seasons ago. Curragh drew 3-3 with Rathmines in the last round, Round 11, while Malahide slipped past Rathmines to take second place. It adds a second trophy to the club who won the Killane Shield in 2005 - a knockout competition for teams in Divisons 3-6.

At the completion of the season, Curragh finished in 8th Place out of 12 teams. The Curragh were promoted from a lower division prior to the commencement of the season to fill a gap after team withdrew.

 BRIAN TIERNAN - R.I.P.

The death has occurred of Brian Tiernan who passed away on 12th January 2006. Brian was a club stalwarth for many years winning the club championship in 1997 and 2000. Brian who lived at Rathbride, the Curragh joined the club in the early 1980s and served as Club Chairman in 1997 and 1998. He was most renowned for his Blitz chess. He was in poor health in recent years.
