Great run by North Kildare Farmer’s Cross Country Club members in Donadea / Staplestown area result in sizeable contribution to Tir na Mona Council special project funds.

An unusual mixture of sounds emanated from St. Kevin’s G.A.A. grounds on Sunday afternoon January9th as more than 60 horses and and their riders prepared to take part in another cross country ride organized by North Kildare Farmer’s Cross Country Club maestros Charlie O’ Neill and Pat Murphy with the kind permission of Coillte Teo and the farmers’ and landowners’ in and around the Tir na Mona Community area.

With a heart stopping clatter the entire group moved out from St. Kevin’s about 2.30 on a fine winter afternoon and seemed to thunder along the road to Kilnamoragh where they entered Donadea Forest Park and entertained dozens of family groups who happened to come on them as they made their way along the western pathways and forest trails of the forest before emerging at the ‘blue’ gate before proceeding across country to the Range and Derry and Derrycrib and Hortland Street. They crossed the Knockanally road at Hortland where all enjoyed a huge run through Domnall Houlihan’s lands with plenty of jumping and falling, before making their way back via Derrycrib to Dunmurraghill and St. Kevins. There the G.A.A. club members provided a most hospitable welcome in their extensive new premises to exhausted riders and steaming horses each of whom he'd managed to make it back to Staplestown more or less in one piece.

After a raffle organized by Tir na Mona Council members, Charlie O’ Neill thanked those associated with Tir na Mona for liasing with those local landowners and residents through whose lands the riders passed and he presented a cheque on behalf of the Cross Country Club members, to go towards future Tir na Mona projects in the area. Busy St. Kevin’s chairman Pat Cox and his committee were also heartily thanked for providing and organizing the hospitality and most important parking facilities on a great day.

Earth’s Gifts

Trollops, Tinkers, Traders,

Twinkling like stars amongst

The rusty neighbours.

"We can tell by the

Company you keep!" It seems…..!

"Beware their wrath!"

Pot menders, metal benders,

Musicians, Palmists!

"Tommy rot!" you said.

In the meantime,

They trot the mare,

Shoe the spare,

And "Don’t stare!" At

The red wet noses of

The children,

Blue cold hands

Of the maidens,

Pale wrinkled yellowed

Faces of the elders.

"Beware the curse!"

Light a fire on earth

They do,

Mend, shoe,

Bend for you!

Evenings, sit and sing,

At the fire at night,

Stare in the embers.

Not a sound, but the hiss

And kiss of the sparks

From the crackling crab.

That came down

Last back end.

Under the weight of it’s fruit

That you were

Too lazy

To burn!

Incinerator Objection

The Bord Pleanala oral hearing to the incinerator at Kilcock has been taking place in the Glen Royal Hotel, Maynooth during the last weeks. It started on the 24th January and is expected to finish by the 3rd of February. The Tir Na Mona Group are supporting this appeal and we hope that the people of Coill Dubh, Donadea, Staplestown and Timahoe came out in large numbers to support our neighbours in Kilcock. The result of the Oral Hearing is expected in early March.

It is very important to show how much the wider community are against the proposal to build the incinerator at Kilcock or any where for that matter!

We should all buy and fly blue flags, which cost £5 each and the proceeds will go to pay the expenses for the costs of objecting to the incinerator. The blue flags represent pollution free air for our environment and can be purchased from Ward’s shop, Donadea, the Tir Na Mona office, Timahoe (Tel. No. 045 870210), the Incinerator office, Kilcock (Tel. No. 01 6287888) or Tiermohan school.
