__________December Timahoe News__________

Friends and neighbours of Pat and Tommy Flaherty wish them every happiness in their new home. Although busy moving house, Pat still found time to streamline the distribution of the newsletter in our area, and co-ordinate the December Poker Classic. That’s dedication for you!

DAY CARE

We are pleased to announce that Allenwood Day Care Centre have extended a warm welcome to newcomers from the Timahoe area. They provide transport to and from the center, once weekly, and offer an enjoyable day to all who come – chitchat, meals, cards and above all, a friendly neighbourly atmosphere. If you would like more details, contact Shirley at 863583

Credit Union Poster Competition

Congratulations to Karen Brosnan and Karen Dunne, from Timahoe N.S., prize winners in the local Credit Union Poster Competition. There were 252 entries this year, so both these young artists must be very talented indeed. We wish them every success at the next level of the competition.

Active Age Group

A meeting to set up an Active Age Group in our area was held in The Hob, Kelly’s Bar, on Saturday 18th November last. A very small number attended, but what we lacked in numbers was compensated by the lively discussion. Ideas flew fast and furious. All who attended were enthusiastic. A Christmas get-together is in the pipeline. In the New Year we hope to set the ball rolling and coax along a larger attendance. This is an ideal opportunity for our “more mature” citizens to meet and mingle, chat ….and complain. Our Active Age committee – Shirley, Pauline and Margaret – will be there to take your suggestions on board.

Table Quiz

The Timahoe Community Development Council November Table Quiz was held, as usual, on the last Friday of the month, in Kelly’s Bar. The proceeds were in aid of the Timahoe N.S. children’s Christmas Party. Quizmaster, Sam Leigh, presented a challenging quiz and £142 nett proceeds will subsidise the children’s party. We are pleased to be associated with this festive event. The monthly table quiz resumes in January. Aileen Saunders is, even now, busy gathering her questions. We take this opportunity of thanking all our quiz presenters during the year. Their time and effort is greatly appreciated. Would you like to give it a shot? Everyone has their own personal approach. Varying the presenters adds to the interest and enjoyment.
Contact Margaret at 863508 to arrange a month.
A table quiz for senior pupils in Timahoe N.S. is being coordinated by our Youth Committee and will be held in the week approaching Christmas. We appreciate Mr. Lynch’s co-operation in making time in the hectic pre Christmas schedule to host the quiz and we hope all who participate enjoy the event.

“Every journey begins with the first step” Our three year journey towards a Community Meeting House has, at times, seemed all uphill ….. meetings, discussions, fundraising, more meetings drawing up plans …..and more meetings! The members of our Building Committee – Mick, Pat, Gail Terry and Margaret (fondly referred to as “The Famous Five”) deserve praise for their determination to hold on to the dream. This year Noel Byrne joined the ranks …… and the meetings went on. Three years later, we have made PROGRESS. The site notice has been erected and planning application has been submitted. Noel Fitzgerald and Councillor P.J. Sheridan must be acknowledged for bringing us to our first landmark. Their guidance and advice were like road signs, steering us along the way. 2000 A.D……site notice 2001 A.D……????

Thanks ….and please…………..and Happy Christmas Christmas is traditionally a time to think of those who have helped us over the year, our family, relations, friends, neighbours and colleagues. It provides us with an opportunity to acknowledge their care and kindness. Timahoe Community Development Council took time out during their November committee meeting to do just that. Although we meet monthly and are busy working in between meetings, we could not make any progress without your support. This comes in many shapes and forms. The most obvious, I suppose, is active – attending our fundraisers. With all the demands on your pockets and on your time, we appreciate the financial support you have given us over the last number of years. Your goodwill is equally appreciated. Your kind words of encouragement keep us going, keep us trying, keep us working. Your interest in our goals, both long and short term, is valued and any comments – positive or negative – are taken on board and shape our decisions. So, Thank you….for all your support Please…..continue to support us.

Timahoe Community Development Council wish our neighbours and friends a warm wonderful Christmas. We hope 2001 will be good to you and for you. Quoting an old Irish blessing: “May God hold us all in the palm of His hand.” Timahoe Community Development Council would like to acknowledge the generosity of Ger Kelly in providing facilities for our meetings and functions in Kelly’s Bar and for his sponsorship for the events run during the year. Now that Christmas is nearly upon us it might be a good opportunity to take the time to say a special “hello” to our neighbours. In these busy days we all seem to be rushing hither and yon, with very little time to stop for a friendly chat. The holiday season gives us the chance to “slow down” for a few days; so go on, get out there and drop in on your neighbours, have a chat and just pass the time of day, you’ll both feel better for it. In particular try to drop in on any elderly neighbours, the winter in particular can be a lonely time for them due to the cold weather. They might need a lift to the shops or just welcome a friendly face dropping in for a chat.

BENEFIT NIGHT

The benefit night held in Kelly’s Pub on the 28th Oct last was very well supported. A total of £2044.54 was collected. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who attended and those who gave items for the auction and the raffle. We would also like to say a big “Thank You” to the ladies who made sandwiches. A special word of thanks to Margaret Dunne, Paddy Maher, Kelly’s Pub, Woodlands Golf Club, Tommy Grogan, The Village Shop, Changes Hairdressers, Choice Stores, St. Kevin’s GFC and S Dunne Landscapes and to those who gave cash donations. Many thanks, P. Flaherty & T. Kelly.

Timahoe Ladies Club (AKA The Movement)

A revival meeting of Timahoe Women’s Movement was held on November 2nd in Kelly’s pub, Timahoe. There was a very good attendance, and some big decisions were made. The first of note is the name of the group has changed to Timahoe Ladies Club (AKA The Movement). Secondly a formal committee was formed with three positions being filled: Chairperson, Paula McEvoy;Secretary, Clare Kelly and Treasurer, Laura Cullen.
A substantial list of potential activities for the group to engage in, over the next year was made - including yoga, salsa dancing, flower arranging, self defense, colour me beautiful and walking tours to name but a few. The variety of suggestions ensures that there will be something for women of all ages, stages and fitness to enjoy.
The next meeting will be held at 9pm on Thursday, December 7th, again in Kelly’s Bar Timahoe. Anyone wishing to come along is very welcome. Please feel free to contact Paula McEvoy @ O45-8635O3 for further details. Paula McEvoy, Chairperson
