ACTIVE AGE GROUP

LOOKING BACK !

"Kelly's Heroes" celebrated their first birthday at their A.G.M. in November. It was an emotional moment when the cake arrived and Brigid Heffernan , founder member, cut the cake to a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday"
Christmas was doubly celebrated by the group. They got into the festive spirit on 7th December in "the Hamlet", and were in flying form for the Christmas Party on 19th.This year the Active Age Group were in a financial position to host the party, due to the generosity of our community , who supported the weekly Bonus No. Members, neighbours and friends met to celebrate in "Kelly's". The Lounge was transformed into a wonderland, with decorations, flickering candles, festive table settings and party hats. Staplestown Choir, led by Elaine Kane, Choirmistress, added to the atmosphere with carol singing. Looking on, it appeared that the singers and musician, Brian Maher, were enjoying themselves just as much as their appreciative audience! A tasty, traditional Christmas meal was prepared by Liz Ward and served by a team of efficient helpers.

Our sincere thanks to:

Our sponsors, Brady Meats, John Heffernan, Gary Burke and the donor of the turkeys, who wishes to remain anonymous
Liz Ward and her team of helpers
All who donated spot prizes
Supporters of the Bonus No. who made this night financially possible
Active Age members without whose support there would not be an Active Age group in Timahoe.

LOOKING FORWARD

Having enjoyed such a successful first year, the pressure is on the Active Age Committee to maintain the standard. At their January Meeting, M.Kane (Chairperson), S.Higgins (Secretary) and Ger Kelly(Treasurer) evaluated the past year and compiled a programme of events for the coming year. It sounds exciting, with many novel ideas being introduced.
The Active Age meet on the last Wednesday of the month, in Kelly's.
New members always welcome.

APPEAL FOR MUSICIANS !

During the past year, musicians have provided their services, talents and time free to entertain the Active Age Group, at their monthly Get-togethers. This is an ideal opportunity to acknowledge Colm Hickson, Ger Casey, Brian Maher, Elaine Kane & Staplestown Choir. Paddy Kelly (Prosperous ) planned to join the list, by entertaining us at the Christmas Party but, due to an unforeseen event, was unable to oblige.
We extend an open invitation to any musician, singer, storyteller or dancer who would volunteer their talent to entertain for a couple of hours, to contact Margaret Kane (863508). Anyone with a talent to share and a few hours to spare will be welcomed with a heart and a half !

EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT

"Kelly's Kitchen" is rapidly becoming the seat of learning in Timahoe. A very successful 10 week Personal Development Course was held there, in the Autumn, facilitated by Mary Jo Hatton and organised by Timahoe Ladies Club.

On Wednesday 6th February an 8 week course for parents of children from 3 yrs - 8 yrs will commence. Each 2 hour Session will begin at 8.00 p.m. Places are limited to 15 and, due to the high interest in the course, they have all been filled. We regret that some parents were disappointed when they were too late to reserve a place. We will research the possibility of organising a second course to facilitate those disappointed.

Margaret Kane, Kate Butler and Fiona Murphy have to travel further afield to Newbridge, to pursue their chosen course…. A 10 week course on Community Development, organised by Network Kildare. They hope that they themselves, our Community Council and the community at large will benefit from what they learn , believing that "through knowledge, comes development"

TABLE QUIZZES!

Congratulations to Aileen Saunders & Gail & Paddy Maher on their excellent Quiz on Friday, 28th December. A thoroughly enjoyable night was had by all. It was smoothly and professionally presented. Round after round proceeded with precision timing. The "feel good" factor was obvious. All 11 tables were charmed with their high scores and everyone was in with a chance until the last round, when the winner was decided by a Tie-Breaker.
The March issue will feature a detailed account of the exploits of "Gentleman John" and "The Legend" as hosts of the January Quiz. The Table Quiz is back on the agenda for 2002 and will be held on the last Friday of the month, in "Kelly's Lounge", in aid of the Community House Building Fund. It's a great way to meet people and make new friends, especially if you are new to the area. All are warmly welcomed, so please come along.

HEALTH CENTRE

At the Community Council A.G.M., in October, the issue of a local Health Centre was raised. Since the closure of the Health Centre (near the Bord na Mona Works in Timahoe) due to vandalism, we have lost local access to doctors, dentists and nurses. The elderly and parents of babies, toddlers and children have to make their way to Carbury or Kilmeague, to the nearest Health Centre.
We are researching the possibility of having the local Health Centre repaired and re-opened. A vital part of our campaign will be harnessing the support of our community and of the neighbouring areas. We will keep you updated on our efforts ….. but we will need your support to make progress.
