Kynog United V Kilcullen

Kynog Utd 3 – 3 Kilcullen Sunday saw Kilcullen make the trip to Kynog and both teams served up an excellent match for the spectators who had braved the cold. The match opened with Kynog attacking from the off and pushing Kilcullen back, but it was Kilcullen who took the lead when Cormac Stopes ran on to a through ball before firing a powerful shot into the net. Kynog got themselves level almost immediately when Josh Harris curled a corner onto the post with the keeper beaten. Both teams created chances as the defences struggled on the slippery surface and it took a brave save from Kynog’s Shane O’Connor to prevent Kilcullen from extending their lead before Kynog drew level when an unfortunate Kilcullen defender turned the ball into his own net from a cross to take the teams into the break level.  Kilcullen started the second half strongly and with Adam Walsh driving them on, they took the lead through Cormac Stopes second goal. Kynog were under pressure and only some fine defending from Justin Reilly kept Kilcullen from extending their lead, but they could do nothing as Kilcullen scored a fine third goal through Hugh O Mahony. Kynog didn’t stop believing that they could get back into the match and with only a few minutes to go, they got a goal back when Josh Lee scored with a free-kick from the edge of the box. Kynog were well on top now and looking for the equaliser. They came very close when a Josh Harris shot beat the keeper only for a great headed goal-line clearance to keep it out. Kynog were not to be denied however, and got the equaliser when another free-kick was turned into the net with only seconds left on the clock to leave both teams level at the end of a pulsating encounter.

Under 15 Kynog United V Athy Town

Kynog United 3
Athy Town    2

A closely contested game took place in Kynog Park on Saturday last between two fully committed teams. Donal McGrath opened the scoring for Kynog in the 12th minute. Athy started to gain control of midfield with Dylan Kelly prominent and the visitors defence was being well marshalled by Mark Robertson. The home teams defence had Jack Kenny and Eamon Cox at its heart and both were excelling on the day. Athy equalised in the 29th minute following a free kick that saw Cian Gilligan make a great reflex save only for the ball to find James Clancy who found the roof of the net. The remainder of the half saw the visitors with most of the possession but unable to create chances.
The second half saw the introduction of Darren Carty and Conor Staines for the home team. Kynog started to increase the tempo of their game and fewer passes were going astray. Athy always looked threatening at set pieces. They deservedly took the lead in the 48th minute when Sean Ronan found Karl Foley whose effort found the back of the Kynog net. The home team responded well and were awarded a free kick  some 25 yards out which was driven home by Martin Baneham. Kynog were now creating chances and a great run and pass by Conor Staines found Donal McGrath whose shot shaved the crossbar. Kynog retook the lead in the 68th minute when a Conor Staines shot was well saved by David O Toole only for Shane Merriman to follow up and score from the rebound. There was enough time left for Shane Merriman to force a tremendous save from David O Toole diving high to his left. At the other end Athy went in search of an equaliser but were denied by some resolute defending.Kynog can be proud of a tremendous team effort on the day.

Under 10 Kynog United V Clane

Kynog v Clane
It was a match that Kynog badly wanted to win and they went out with that intention.
It started very strongly with Kynog enjoying the better half of the chances.
Kynogs PJ O'Neill took a fine strike which just went wide of the post. Minutes later Brian Crosse was denied by the Clane upright.
The Kynog back line stood strong and some excellent defending from Anthony Farrell meant the Kynog keeper was relativley quite. However she did have to make one fine save to keep it nil nil at half time.
Both teams returned with a goal in mind however neither side had many chances in the second half.
With only minutes left in the game Clane had a clear shot at goal but a terrific block by Johnny Byrne kept things level.
Credit to both teams for playing extremely well, nil nil being the fairest result in a hard fought game.

Under 11 Kynog United V BBC

Kynog Utd 2 – 1 BBC Utd

Saturday morning saw BBC make the short journey to Kynog where both team produced an enthralling encounter. Both teams started at frantic pace as they tried to impose themselves on the game, but the first chance fell to BBC and only some great goalkeeping from Reece Winders, who had an outstanding match, kept BBC out. BBC created a second chance and were unlucky to see Sam Doran’s shot skim just over. Kynog were being pressed back but were unlucky not to take the lead when a Jack Gorey found Cathal Mattimoe and his cross just eluded the onrushing forwards. Midway through the first half, BBC took the lead when Colm Fox’s through ball found Haig Oman and he coolly slotted into the bottom corner. BBC nearly doubled their lead through the same player but he was marginally offside. Kynog roared back and found the equaliser when Glen Thorpe played a great ball behind the full back for Cathal Mattimoe who ran on to slam the ball into the corner of the net. As the first half came to a close, it was Kynog who were pressing for a second and they were unlucky as both Adam Lynch and Cathal Mattimoe went close.
The second half opened as the first half closed with Kynog pressing and when Adam Toman released Adam Lynch, he held off his marker to finish and give his team the lead. This seemed to spur BBC on to greater efforts and, driven on by Joey Higgins, they pressed Kynog back. The Kynog back line, with David Randles and Graham Beirne having another excellent game, creaked but stood firm, and even when BBC got through, they found Reece Winders in inspirational form in the Kynog goal, leaping to get his fingertips to one fierce shot and touching it onto the bar and over. With the game moving into the last few minutes, BBC continued to press, while Kynog looked dangerous on the break, and they came close when Dylan Smullen and Craig Harris combined to put Cathal Mattimoe clear but his well struck shot was well saved by Rory Phelan. BBC created one more chance but it was not to be as Kynog held on for the win and the three points.

In the 19th minute Conor Staines went close to scoring for the home team. Newbridge broke away and a slick passing move allowed Ian Mulligan to finish well. They doubled their advantage just 2 minutes later when a left wing cross was well headed home by Vincent Murray. To their credit Kynog regrouped and matched their opponents for the remainder of the half.
The second half saw Kynog start strongly and they were rewarded when a fine Jack Kenny pass found Conor Staines who finished well. For Kynog Martin Baneham saw a free kick just clear the crossbar whilst Newbridge were denied by a couple of excellent Cian Gilligan saves.
