A tourist in reality is an exhibition focusing on two artists where drawing is their primary medium. Both artists combine drawing with other approaches in their practices. While very different in their individual perspectives, applications and concepts, their work gives a good sense of current contemporary methods and how drawing is as important as ever for working artists.
Laura Byrne is from Naas, Co. Kildare. She holds a BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting from Edinburgh College of Art (2010). While undertaking her studies, she received two prestigious awards from the National Gallery of Scotland in 2008 and 2009. She exhibits extensively throughout the UK and abroad. This is Laura’s first exhibition in Kildare since completing her BA. Drawing is an integral part of her work and practice as a contemporary artist. The process and applications of drawing lends itself to her interest and ideas in stories, how they are narrated and perceived. Her practice extends from drawing and painting to other disciplines such as sculpture and writing.
Laura Fitzgerald is originally from Inch, Co. Kerry. She holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Art fromthe National College of Art & Design, Dublin (2007). Laura recently completed a Per Cent for Art commission of drawings and sculptures for Presentation Primary School, Portarlington. She was artist in residence in the Waterford Healing Arts Trust in 2009 and received the Belmont Mills National Bursary in 2008. She exhibits throughout Ireland and her work has been selected for exhibition at Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin this autumn. Ideas which inform her work relate to memory, nostalgia, real and imagined histories, perspective, the minuet and the unseen. Laura’s practice combines drawing, installation, sculpture and video.
