Funding announcement - 13th May, 2014
The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD, today (Tuesday, 13th May)
announced additional Exchequer investment of €200 million to fund new projects
in a range of sectors including new road schemes, social housing to
meet acute needs arising in that area and a range of tourist related
works to help support long term jobs.
Under the Government's
'Transport Programme: Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport' an
additional provision of €50 million has been provided and will allow for
the progression of the Athy Southern Distributor Road and a number of
specific road improvement projects in Counties Cork, Wicklow and
Kilkenny. This additional investment will yield economic benefits in
terms of immediate job creation and longer term maintenance of valuable
and essential transport assets.
The proposed Athy Southern
Distributor Road links the N78 Kilkenny Road to the south west of the
town centre to a new roundabout to the east of Athy town. The new 3.2km
road includes bridges over the River Barrow and Dublin Waterford railway
line.
