Formula Ford Trophy launched by Mondello Park and Abrakebabra.
Mondello Park has announced the first details of the new for 2014 'Vivion Daly Memorial Trophy', for Formula Ford, which will be sponsored by Abrakebabra, one of Vivion's former sponsors. The race will be the centre piece of the Irish Formula Ford Festival weekend. which runs on June 7th & 8th, and the Vivion Daly Memorial Trophy Race will carry a prize fund of at least €6,000.
Vivion Daly was a Formula Ford 1600 stalwart for many years competing in Mondello, Kirkistown and the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch. He progressed into Formula Opel with support of long time sponsor Abrakebabra where he remained a front runner for many years. Following his progression into Formula Opel he always remained involved in the Formula Ford 1600 class, which he viewed as an essential training ground for up and coming drivers.
Formula Ford has been re-introduced to Mondello Park this season with the support of circuit owner Martin Birrane who is also a firm believer in the category's ability to nurture Irish Motor Racing 's future stars. The first step in the re-growth of the popular single seater series was the instigation of a 'Champion of Mondello' series with its own attractive end of season prize package.
Stage two of the redevelopment of the class is the Irish Formula Ford Festival featuring the big money Vivion Daly Memorial Trophy race. The event will see Formula Ford top the bill over two days of racing. On Saturday June 7th, drivers will compete over two races, for 'Champion of Mondello' and 'Irish Championship' points, while on Sunday June 8th, they will be free to concentrate on the Formula Ford Festival and the Vivion Daly Trophy race.
The Festival format will begin with a qualifying session on Sunday followed by a series of knock-out heats leading to the final, with the number of heats to be run dependent on the number of drivers entered. Circuit owner Martin Birrane has contributed €1,000 to the event's prize-fund and this has been added to by Abrakebabra and additional event sponsors taking it to over €6,000 so far.
The entry list for the Formula Ford Festival is expected to feature all of the local Irish drivers from both North and South and a number of overseas visitors. The event will also include races for additional Irish championship classes.
Further details of the event will be released over the coming weeks as more and more Formula Ford supporters get involved. In the mean time Mondello Park is calling on all Formula Ford owners to get their entries in and make this a fitting celebration of one of the greatest names in Irish Formula Ford racing history.
