€46 million for Social Housing in Kildare

Kildare is to benefit from an investment of over €46 million under the Social Housing Investment Programme for 2009 according to local Fianna Fail TD, Seán Ó Feargháil.

“My colleague, the Minister for Housing and Local Services has informed me that over €46 million will be allocated for social and other housing in Kildare. The funds will be given to Kildare County Council, Athy Town Council and Naas Town Council.”

“Kildare County Council will receive €25 million, Athy Town Council will get €2 million and Naas Town Council will receive €7 million under the Social Housing Investment Programme. Under the Capital Loan and Subsidy Scheme the three Councils will receive a total of €8.45 million; €1.35 million under the Capital Assistance Scheme; €500,000 for Traveller Accommodation and €1.945 million for Rental Accommodation Scheme.”

“Under the Improvement Works Allocations for improvements to social homes €2.15 million has been allocated to Kildare County Council for Central Heating. A total of €285,000 will be divided between the three Kildare Councils for retrofitting and energy measures with Kildare County Council receiving €225,000, Athy Town Council getting €40,000 and Naas Town Council receiving €20,000. Athy Town Council will also receive €1.2 million for remedial works.”

“I am pleased that even in these difficult economic times that the Government is prioritising those who need the most help. It is vital that we continue to invest in social housing in a bid to meet the increasing need and that those homes that are owned by the Councils are well maintained. I am delighted to see that funding has been given for retrofitting and energy measures that are not only important for the environment but will also help those on low incomes with their heating and energy bills,” concluded Deputy Ó Feargháil.

New Primary Care Team for Athy

Chairperson of Athy RAPID, Cllr Richard Daly described “as a major step forward in local health care for the region” the launch of the Athy Primary Health Care Team in Athy this week.

“The new strategy does not rely on any extra resources but uses the existing resources in a more efficient and localised way. It combines the expertise of the local GPs, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists working in partnership to provide a high standard of excellence to the Athy hinterland

Athy is lucky to be one of the first areas to have this service rolled and as a RAPID town I am delighted that we have been selected and I congratulate all the health professionals who have cooperated together to better meet the needs of the local population.

Developing Primary Care means that some of the pressure can be taken away from our acute hospitals with patients accessing the services of Physiotherapists and Occupational therapists in their local communities.

In many areas of service good communication and cooperation can provide a better service to the end user without developing a new layer of administration. Perhaps this strategy used in the health service could be mirrored in some of our other services.”

“This is a good day for Athy” concluded Cllr Daly

Kildare County Council marks its 110th birthday

The 110th anniversary of Kildare County Council will be marked on Wednesday, 22 April at 8pm in the council's award-winning new headquarters at Aras Cill Dara, Naas with a public talk on the first meeting of the council in 1899.

The talk by local historian, Liam Kenny, will take place 110 years to the day since the inaugural council took office following the local elections of April 1899. The event will reflect on the excitement -- and the controversies -- generated by the first election in which the people of county Kildare were given a say in the choice of their elected representatives.

For generations before, participation in county administration had been confined to the landed elite; the 1899 elections were the first to bring a level of democracy to the county. The timing of the commemoration is particularly apt given that campaigning is in full swing for the 2009 local elections with twenty-five seats to be filled on the council from electoral areas throughout the county.

We hope to have members of the Fulham family in attendance on the night with some of the original equipment used by the Co. Surveyor on the roads of Kildare.

Come to ARAS CHILL DARA for a talk by local historian Liam Kenny on the 110th anniversary of Kildare County Council,Wed. 22 April 2009 at 8 p.m.

All Welcome.

New Start Times for Punchestown Festival

Punchestown racecourse announced that the start times for the opening races for the first four days at the Irish National Hunt Festival have been moved an hour later to 3.45pm.

The move will see the seven race programmes run from 3.45pm through to 7.15pm on Tuesday 28th, Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th April and 3.45pm to 7.45pm on Friday 1st May while the start time will remain at 2.45pm for Saturday 2nd May.

This decision continues Punchestown’s policy of adapting to the current economic challenges and making racing more accessible to the general public. After extensive consultation with all stakeholders it is felt that this adjustment will accommodate those racegoers who wish to carry out at least a half day of work prior to racing in a time when employment priorities are forefront in people’s minds.

The change means that the major races of the Punchestown Festival are now to be shown live on RTE during primetime which significantly increases the potential viewership. Having consulted major sponsors including Kerrygold, Guinness, Rabobank, Ladbrokes and Ballymore, Punchestown can reveal that all are in favour of the alteration as it will increase brand exposure and facilitate the needs of their corporate guests and clients. Racing industry bodies such as Horse Racing Ireland, the Irish Racehorse Trainers Association and members of the racing press are all in support of the initiative based on the positive effects it will contribute to the industry.

Dick O’Sullivan, General Manager Punchestown, stated “The business world has changed more in the last eight months than it has in the last ten years so it was a case of adapting to the new circumstances. One of the most significant advancements we have made in recent times was to win back the support of the local community and we feel that by facilitating the hard working public we are making it easier to justify an afternoon at Punchestown with a decent days work under their belt “

“There are so many parties involved in the Punchestown Festival and having thought long and hard about this, we feel that it will benefit and add to the event. The success of the festival benefits the local towns and villages from hotels and pubs to shops and boutiques so to optimise the success of the festival will optimise the trade locally”.

“Decisions in recent years, including the addition of the very successful concluding fifth day, have been good for racing and the race going public so we are confident about this latest initiative”.

The Punchestown Irish National Hunt Festival takes place from Tuesday 28th April to Saturday 2nd May 2009. General Admission is €30 with Students and OAP’s paying €15. The Party @ Punchestown Pack offers excellent value to group bookings at just €29pp.

Curragh: 2008 Gladness Winner Attempts Repeat

Jumbajukiba to attempt back to back victories in Bruce Betting sponsored Gladness Stakes

Bruce Betting make their sponsorship debut at the Curragh this Sunday 5th April when they put  their name to the  Gladness Stakes,  and the Group 3 contest has attracted a very competitive field which includes last year’s winner Jumbajukiba. In total there are 15 entries for the 7 furlong event, including three British trained challengers in Atlantic Sport, Express Wish and Lovelace.

Mad About You, third behind Oh Goodness Me in the Park Express Stakes two weeks ago, is also among the entries and her trainer Dermot Weld could also be represented by Le Cadre Noir and Tian Shan. Duff, Kargali and Alhabeeb all add spice to what promises to be a race to savour.

Famous Name is an interesting contender for the BAM Contractors Alleged Stakes. The Dermot Weld trained four- year- old is one of 15 entries for the 10 furlong Listed contest which has also attracted the Mark Johnson trained pair of Boscage and Drill Sergeant. Pollen and Estrela Braga, first and second respectively in the Irish Lincolnshire at the Curragh two weeks ago, are set to renew rivalry, while Poet and Celtic Dane are others of note in a competitive event.

There are also 15 entries for Newbridge Credit Union Loughbrown Stakes, including three from the powerful Aidan O’Brien stable in Chief Lone Eagle, Gluteus Maximus and the highly consistent Westphalia. Chorus of Angels, gutsy winner of the recent Madrid Handicap over this course and distance two weeks ago, will bid to follow up that success, while Mark Johnson can select between Cry of Freedom and Crackdown.  Jim Bolger has made an impressive start to the new flat season and he will be represented by Vocalised.

National Hunt fans are well catered with the likes of Ebadiyan, Nicanor, Beau Michael and Timari, all set to clash in the Newbridge Parishes Charity Day Race.

The first of eight races commences at 2.15pm and this popular family day will include a variety of free entertainment for children. The ground at the Curragh is currently Good to Yielding.
