FREE Genealogy Services at Carton House in Maynooth!

The Genealogy Roadshow is coming to Kildare. It’s a day-long Genealogy event, filmed for RTE television, which can help you trace your family’s roots for free. The roadshow will be hosted by RTE’s Derek Mooney as we try to help ordinary people find extraordinary stories from their family history.

Do you think you’re related to someone famous? Is there a family connection to some politician, entertainer, sports personality or explorer? If so, we want to meet you!

If there’s a mystery hanging from your family tree we can help you solve it.
Was one of your relations involved in a dramatic part of local or national history? We want to find out all the details.

Our team of genealogy experts and historians are coming to Kildare and will be giving free advice and help - but time and access to the experts is limited, so come early. If you don’t want a face-to-face meeting, you’ll still be able to watch the experts and hear the advice they give to each person they speak to and hear all the tips they give out.

We’re looking for people with connections to well known figures of the past, people with a family mystery to solve or people with family connections to historical events. You tell us the story and we’ll search for the evidence.

Maybe you believe there’s a connection to one of Kildare’s famous sons like Arthur Guinness or Ernest Shackleton? Maybe you’re the great, great, grand nephew of Wolfe Tone? Are you a relative to the first man ever to hoist the new Sam Maguire Cup in 1928, Bill Gannon? We want to hear all about it!

So if you have letters, photographs, birth certificates, heirlooms or any other piece of information that might help, then bring them along to Carton House on ‘Sunday January 16th’ for a fun, free day out and let us help you get on the right track.

Venue:
Carton House
Maynooth
Co. Kildare

Time: 11:00am – 5.00pm (Sunday January 16th 2011)

The programme is being produced by Big Mountain Productions. Please contact us if you have any queries – info@bigmountainproductions.com

Snow Beats Punchestown

Tuesday's (14th Dec) meeting at Punchestown has been cancelled, with the course unfit for racing due to snow and frost.

The decision was taken following a course inspection by Turf Club officials on Monday morning.

The fixture, featuring the Grade One John Durkan Chase, was originally scheduled for December 5 but that too fell to the weather, as did another attempt to stage the high-class card last Thursday.

Census Enumerator Jobs Now Advertised Online

Positions as census enumerators are now being advertised on-line according to Kildare North Fianna Fáil TD and Minister of State Áine Brady.

"On Sunday the 10th of April a census will be held in Ireland. In preparation for this, census enumerators will be hired all over Kildare."

"Census enumerators will need to distribute the census forms in advance of the 10th of April and return to homes to collect them once the census has taken place."

"Enumerators will also answer questions that people might have about the form."

"Those who are interested in applying for the positions should be aware that they will need to work at different times of the day and also at weekends to ensure that all forms are distributed and collected in person."

"Applications for the positions open on the 4th of January and close on the 11th of January. The period of work is 10 weeks from the 8th of March to the 13th of May to allow for the distribution and collection for forms. The minimum of 22 hours a week are flexible and will mainly be worked in the evenings and at weekends."

"Anyone interested should be confident knocking on the doors of those they do not know and speaking to people. They should also have a good sense of direction and be able to handle large amounts of paperwork."

"Those interested in applying for the position of census enumerator should look at the website, www.census.ie where pre-registration for interest in the positions and more information can be found."

"The census is a vital piece of information. It allows Governments to plan in advance for services and to direct resources where they are needed. Census enumerators perform a vital role and I am hopeful that there will be considerable interest in the positions in Kildare," concluded Minister Brady.

County Kildare Orchestra Celebrates Christmas

CKO Christmas Concert County Kildare Orchestra is delighted to announce that our Christmas Concert will take place in St. Patrick’s Church, Celbridge, on Saturday 18 December at 8.15pm, with the kind permission of Fr. Paul Taylor, PP.

The programme will feature Mozart’s Impresario Overture, Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony along with Barber’s popular and much-loved Adagio for Strings, plus festive
favourites.

We are particularly delighted to have St. Patrick’s Church Choir performing with us, as well as our usual soloist, tenor Ciarán O’Leary. Ciarán is joining us from London, where he is undertaking further studies in voice in the Guildhall School of Music. Young local clarinettist, Christopher Moriarty-Pearson will perform the 2nd movement from Mozart’s beautiful Concerto for Clarinet.

In light of the current economic situation, ticket prices have been reduced this year to €10. This reflects CKO’s continuing mission to perform the greatest music to the widest audience.

County Kildare Orchestra celebrates its 12th year and has performed in many venues throughout the county.
