Celebrate National Music Day with Award-Winning Perfomers

Love:live music 2011, Ireland’s National Music Day, takes place on Friday 8th April. This national day is coordinated by Music Network and to celebrate Riverbank Arts Centre and Music Network present the stunning, award-winning a capella group Calmus Ensemble in Newbridge, Co. Kildare.

Calmus-Ensemble For over ten years the remarkable Calmus Ensemble has wowed audiences with its unique style of a capella singing, blending five scintillating and soulful voices – four male and one female – in a clear-voiced, perfectly balanced ensemble.

Originally formed by five graduates of the St. Thomas Boys‘ Choir, Leipzig, the group added the glittering soprano voice of Anja Lipfert in 2001 in order to expand their repertoire, which now encompasses everything from Gregorian chants, Irish airs, jazz and folk songs to the music of Palestrina, Bach and Debussy.

Acclaimed for its flawless intonation and extraordinary harmonic amalgam, this award-winning ensemble has toured extensively in Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, France, Finland, Austria, Spain, Portugal and North and South America. As well as performing alongside the likes of the King’s Singers and the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, the group has taken part in many major festivals such as the Bach-Festival in Leipzig.

"Technically stunning singers, but equally important, their interpretive talents and musicality are matchless… they bring passion to their interpretations and whatever they sing to glorious life."
Deseret Morning News (Salt Lake City)

Adelaide Masters Series Announcements Continue to Impress

adelaide-masters The Adelaide Masters Series continues to impress prior to its opening event of 2011, with further star riders, additional sponsors, UK teams and factory backed machinery, all being announced over the last few days.

The latest additions to the line-up include reigning champion Marshall Neill who returns to defend his title on the 2011 Aprilia Factory APRC that he will campaign in British Superstock. Neill will ride for GR Motorsport, the official Aprilia UK team, and his return to Mondello is sure to prove very popular with fans following his performances last season.

Joining GR Aprilia in crossing the water will be Team Colin Appleyard Macadam Racing who will run hugely popular Dubliner Jack Kennedy on his British Supersport Championship Yamaha. Kennedy is one of the country's biggest rising motorcycle stars and he will come to Mondello Park hot on the heels of his World Championship début at Donington.

The third overseas team will be the BMW outfit of Isle of Man resident Gavin Hunt who will also appear at Mondello fresh from a World Superstock outing at Donington. Further UK teams are currently in discussion to join the grid and the upsurge in interest has been greatly assisted by the addition of two new sponsors, Irish Ferries and Failte Ireland (the Irish Tourist Board), who join Adelaide Insurance Services, Bridgestone, Relentless and Safety Direct in backing the growing championship.

Those riders that do travel will find some tough opposition in the form of Brian McCormack's TAG Honda, Michael Dunlop with the Street Sweep Kawasaki, Mark Pollock riding for Kingsbury Packaging and Derek Shiels Amigo's Honda. Throw in the ever quick Jonny Buckley, Mark Johnston and Kirk Jamison, and road racers such as Ronan Pentony, Andy Farrell and Emlyn Hughes and this championship will have more strength in depth than ever seen before in an Irish Championship.

The four event Adelaide Masters Series is set to hit its biggest ever audience this season with TV coverage on UTV and Satellite channels, an expected increase in race day spectators and greater media exposure, including regular coverage of the series in Ireland’s most popular daily paper the Irish Independent. Spectators will also be able to keep up to date through the Mondello Park web site and by signing up to the circuit’s free email and text alert service. For further information on the Adelaide Masters Series see www.mondellopark.ie/adelaidemasters.

St Nicholas Abbey to make his return at the Curragh this Sunday

THE Curragh hosts it’s second fixture of the new Flat season to coincide with Mother’s Day this Sunday and there is little doubt that St Nicholas Abbey is the star attraction of the day when he makes his much anticipated return to action in the Listed Geegeez.co.uk Alleged Stakes.

Out of action since finishing sixth behind Makfi in the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas last May, Aidan O’Brien’s colt showed exceptional ability as a juvenile and team Ballydoyle have had to be patient with the son of Montjeu in getting him back to the racecourse. He faces a maximum of 14 rivals in Sunday’s 10 furlong contest and a big performance is expected from him.

The Big Bad Bob Gladness Stakes tops the bill on a competitive eight race programme and the Group Three contest has attracted a quality field headed by the Tommy Stack-trained Lolly For Dolly, which was most impressive when landing the Lodge Park Stud EBF Park Express Stakes at the opening fixture here just over a week ago.

Lolly For Dolly, winner of the Group Three Oratario EBF Athasi Stakes at this venue last May, faces a maximum of 10 rivals in Sunday’s race including Termagant and Paraphernalia who finished fourth and fifth respectively behind her in that Curragh contest nine days ago. Emulous, Luisant and Across The Rhine are three other notable home-trained entries, while Regal Parade and The Cheka are both likely to travel over from Britain to contest the seven furlong race.

Trainer Jim Bolger has a strong hand in the Listed Anne Brewster Memorial Loughbrown Stakes with four of the 10 entries. Whipless, third behind leading Abu Dhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas fancy Dunboyne Express at Leopardstown over the weekend, heads Bolger’s list of four while he can also choose from Deire Na Sli, Gleadhradh and Glor Na Mara. Sing Softly, Imperial Home and Triple Eight are other notable entries for the seven furlong contest.

The Rockview Qualified Riders Flat Race heralds the final in the amateur rider series and the race has attracted 20 entries. Champion National Hunt trainer Willie Mullins is well represented here with the hat-trick seeking Samain and Lovethehigherlaw, while Black Benny, He’s A Delight, Whatwillwecallher, Shadow Eile and Cheltenham bumper disappointment Double Double are all sure to have their followers.

The first of eight races at the Curragh on Sunday commences at 1.55 pm and the ground is currently good to yielding on the round course and yielding on the straight course.

New Season of Events at Riverbank Arts Centre

Riverbank-April-June-2011 It’s a fresh and sprightly Spring season for April to June at Riverbank Arts Centre. Last season saw some exciting developments at Riverbank with an upgrade to Digital Cinema and the development of a brand new children’s arts space at the centre. The benefits of these improvements are reflected this season with a host of exciting shows, workshops and exhibitions for families and children, and an Oscar worthy cinema line-up. Films this season include Blue Valentine, Biutiful starring Javier Bardem, The Pipe, and the highly anticipated Submarine from IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade amongst other quality titles.

In other areas, Riverbank Arts Centre is delighted to welcome Paul Brady for what will be two very special nights of music in the intimate venue. The Unthanks, who have been receiving mass critical acclaim for their new album, take to the stage on April 13th  with support act Tremblin Bells. A special Bob Dylan evening takes place on April 9th with Micheal Gray, author of The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia, showing rare Dylan footage. While Declan O’Rourke and Somewhere under the Rainbow - the Liza Minelli with Kildare’s Sharon Sexton also add to a great music line-up.

Three fabulous nights are planned at the Keadeen Hotel with the return of Faulty Towers- the Dining Experience. The Parting Glass, Here We Are Again Still and The Quare Land are amongst the theatre highlights, while Neil Delamere and David McSavage will satisfy the comedy fans. For football fans, The Parting Glass asks us to recall where we were when our World Cup dreams were dashed with the story of Eoin and his two best friends. On the financial end of things, Riverbank Arts Centre offers some light reflections on our situation with The Quare Land on April 17th - a Celtic Tiger parable starrign Frank O’sullivan and Des Keogh, while Man 1 Bank 0 allows our imaginations to run riot with the true story of Patrick Combs who jokingly lodges a fake $95,0000 junk mail cheque to his bank account only to discover that the bank actually cashed it for him!!

Festival fans will also find two exciting festival events taking place at Riverbank in May. A host of literary stars will be in attendance for the weekend of the Kildare Readers Festival, while the Bealtaine Festival brings a range of workshops, music with Ger Wolfe and theatre with Mary McEvoy to celebrate creativity in older age.

All this, and much much more, is happening on your doorstep this season. To view the full programme and for further information visit www.riverbank.ie or call 045 448327.  For regular updates, find Riverbank Arts Centre on Facebook or on Twitter @riverbankarts

Sponsorship Required In Aid of the Niall Mellon Township Trust

Niall-Mellon-Township-Trust The Niall Mellon Township Trust was started by Niall Mellon in 2002. The charity operates a year round house building programme and since the charity first started it has built 15,000 homes, housing over 80,000 people and that figure continues to grow. 13,000 Irish and South African volunteers have built with the charity over the last 9 years.

Karimi Nash & Michelle Kelly have both been working with the Charity for the past couple of years, and this year we must raise a total of €8000 to help
fund the building of these homes.

We are travelling to South Africa with the Charity in November this year on the annual building blitz, to help build houses for these severely impoverished families living in shacks in the townships of South Africa.

Fundraising is already well under way; we have a number of events planned over the coming months.

One such event is a "Mock Wedding":

Date & Time: Sat 18th June 2011, 8pm till late

Venue: Townhouse Hotel, Naas, Co Kildare

Band & DJ – The Mojitos & DJ Mojito

Hot Finger-food buffet

Raffle/Auction on the night

Tickets: €30

The Niall Mellon Trust head office have also expressed a lot of interest in our event and are offering their full support by arranging a representative from their team to be there on the night to give a speech on the charity and what their work involves.

We will be advertising the event on local radio stations and on weekly newspapers. Tickets will be printed in the form of a wedding invitation and there will be a "mass booklet" where we will be advertising all the companies who have generously sponsored the event.

We are also working on sourcing a well known comedian who will carry out the role of the priest for the ceremony and will also do MC on the night – so while the aim of the event is to raise funds for serious cause, there will be plenty of fun, food, music & entertainment on the night!

We are hoping that our project might be of interest to you as an opportunity to promote your products and company through a sponsorship arrangement.

As you can appreciate when organising a fundraising event, the aim is to keep costs to a minimum and so we hope to be able to source sponsorship and/or donations to help towards covering some of the costs on the night. We would be most grateful if you could assist in this manner.

Please know that all contributions you make will positively impact the work of the charity and lives of the thousands of families living in the informal settlements around the rubbish-strewn side streets of the corrugated iron townships of South Africa.

Irish Flat season kicks into gear at the Curragh - Sun Mar 20th

THE 2011 Irish Flat season kicks into action at the Curragh next Sunday, 20th March when the Group 3 Lodge Park Stud EBF Park Express Stakes and the www.thetote.com Irish Lincolnshire are the twin features on a seven race programme which gets under way at 2.35 pm.

Last season’s leading Flat trainer Aidan O’Brien is double-handed in the Group 3 contest with Juliet Capulet and Gemstone. The latter scored twice from six attempts as a juvenile, including on her final outing at this venue in October when she stayed on strongly to defeat Rising Wind comfortably in a Listed race over this trip. She is clearly a useful sort and looks the pick of the two Ballydoyle-trained fillies.

Jim Bolger is also well represented with Banimpire, Burn The Floor and Stylish One to choose from, while local trainer Dermot Weld has entered both Emulous and Enchanted Evening. Lolly For Dolly is another one worth a mention as the Tommy Stack-trained filly landed her first two races last season, including a seven furlong Group 3 contest at the venue in early May.

There are 20 entries for the Irish Lincolnshire, including six from Britain in Blue Moon, Kylachy Star, Our Joe Mac, Pintura, Stead and The Fifth Member. Toraidhe, which finished a very creditable third behind Big Robert in this contest 12 months ago, bids to go a couple of places better for the Jim Bolger yard. Gimli’s Rock, Hawkhill, Photo Opportunity and Rory Anna are others sure to be prominent in the market.

The Tally Ho Stud EBF Maiden opens proceedings on Sunday and most of the big stables are represented in the first juvenile contest of the season. Aidan O’Brien  has entered Ahimsa, while Jim Bolger can choose between Lonrach, Snowflake Dancer, Taoiane and Whip Rule. Pinkisthecolour and The Firm are Kevin Prendergast’s two entries, while the Richard Fahey-trained Lost City makes the journey over from Britain.

Admission prices for Sunday are 15 euro for adults and 8 euro for senior citizens and under 25’s, while children under 16 have free entry. Meanwhile, the ground at the Curragh is currently Soft.

Rallycross Season Reaches its Climax at Mondello

The Irish Rallycross Championship season reaches its climax this weekend with Sunday's Round Seven at Mondello Park. With the winners already decided in the Overall, Supercar, Modified and Stockhatch divisions it is just the Junior champion and the class runner up positions which are left to be decided.

Despite the absence of championship battles there will be plenty of action to look forward to on Sunday. One of the most notable aspects of the 2010/11 season has been the performances of Ian O'Connell. The Lotus driver has dominated the modified division this season with six wins from six events and his speed has been such that he also sits second in the overall championship, ahead of all bar one of the Supercars. In the absence of champion Tommy Graham this weekend O'Connell will be looking to secure his first ever Superfinal victory to add to his many Modified division wins so he is bound to be in the thick of the action all day long.

In the highly competitive Junior class the title will be fought out between five drivers following a very competitive season, which has produced four different winners. Niall Murray and Tom Holton are tied at the top with Mark Francis, Joel Richardson and Jake Byrne also holding a mathematical chance of lifting the crown. In Stockhatch, dominant champion Gordon Lynch will have some tough opposition with the return of reigning European Rallycross Champion Derek Tohill likely to add to the already frantic action. The line-up will be rounded out by the Rallycar class where there is a strong field of drivers once again.

Practice gets underway on Sunday morning at 09:15. The first of three rounds of heats starts at 10:10, while the final get underway at 15:30. Admission to Sunday's event will be €10.00 with discount tickets available through the special offers page of the Mondello Park web site.

Mondello Park MD John Morris also commented: “The Adelaide Masters Series will run to a format and standard very close to BSB. It will completely raise the bar for short circuit racing in Ireland and this year represents the first of a multi-year development of the series, which along with Adelaide and our other partners, we hope to raise to a level never seen before in Ireland.”

With a €50,000 prize fund, unprecedented TV coverage on terrestrial and satellite channels and a very popular race day format, the Adelaide Masters Series will be the highlight of the Irish Short Circuit Motorcycle Racing season during 2011. The Adelaide Masters Series kicks off on April the 2nd and 3rd with the first three rounds of the series. The remaining nine races take place over three more weekends culminating in the October 1st and 2nd Adelaide Masters Finale which will carry double prize money. Artists Respond to Economy; The Swimming Naked Prophecy

‘Only when the tide goes out do you discover who has been swimming naked’.  Warren Buffett

International-Monetary-Field-Day, by Jennifer Cunningham On Saturday 12th  March a group exhibition of the work of 25 artists will open at Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge, Co. Kildare. In this economic low tide, The Swimming Naked Prophecy is the response of 25 Irish-based artists to legendary investor Warren Buffett’s renowned observation- ‘Only when the tide goes out do you discover who has been swimming naked’.

Buffett’s metaphorical citation offers a humorous mental image of the serious repercussions of careless speculation, one befitting Ireland’s current economic situation with bank bailouts, disappearing billions and severe fiscal crisis.

The Swimming Naked Prophecy is a group drawing exhibition initiated by Mermaid Arts Centre and featuring new work specifically made for the exhibition by twenty five contemporary Irish-based artists. The exhibition offers a range of responses by the invited artists to Ireland’s current social, economic and political circumstances, the recent economic crash and the current mood in Ireland.

Invited Artists:

Aideen Barry / Stephen Brandes / Alan Butler / Mark Clare / Felicity Clear / Róisín Coyle / Culturstruction (Jo Anne Butler + Tara Kennedy) / Jennifer Cunningham / Clodagh Emoe / Fiona Hallinan / Seán Hillen / Jesse Jones / John Jones / Vera Klute / Sam Keogh / David Lilburn / Sean Lynch / Brian Maguire / Bea McMahon / Tom Molloy / Teresa Nanigian / Sorcha O’Brien / Dominic Thorpe / Saskia Vermeulen

Warren Edward Buffett is an American investor, industrialist and philanthropist. He is widely regarded as one of the most successful investors in the world. He was ranked as the world's third wealthiest person in 2010 according to Forbes Magazine.

Curators Nora Hickey and Eilis Lavelle of Mermaid Arts Centre, this work was first shown in Mermaid Arts Centre from December 2 2010 to February 12 2011 and continues to tour to a small number of venues.
