Sewerage Operation and Maintenance

The Sewerage Operations and Maintenance Section is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and operation of the public sewerage network throughout County Kildare, excluding areas which currently fall under the remit of the Town Councils of Naas and Athy.

The public sewerage network includes public foul sewers, wastewater treatment plants and foul pumping stations.

The Sewerage Operations and Maintenance Section is also responsible for sampling treated effluent which is being discharged from its wastewater treatment plants in accordance with the requirements of the Waste Water Discharge (Authorisation) Regulations 2007, the Urban Waste Water Treatment Regulations 2001 as amended and the Environmental Protection Agency Act 1992 .

The Sewerage Operations and Maintenance Section operates a preventative maintenance programme in relation to its wastewater treatment plants and foul pumping stations.

Reports received of blockages are dealt with following confirmation that the blockage is occurring within a public foul sewer and not within a private pipe line or facility which is the responsibility of the owner.

The Sewerage Operations and Maintenance Section would request the cooperation of its users in using the public sewerage network responsibly.

Discharging unsuitable material into the public foul sewerage system such as fats/oils/greases and sanitary products can cause blockages and damage to pumps and equipment.

Misuse of the public sewerage system has the potential to hinder the ability of the Sewerage Operations and Maintenance Section to provide the current high level of service that its users in County Kildare enjoy.
