Description:
St Patrick's College, Maynooth was founded in 1795 as the National Seminary for Ireland. In 1896, it was granted a Pontifical Charter which empowered it to confer degrees in Theology, Philosophy and Canon Law. In 1910, the courses in the Humanities taught in the College were recognised for degree purposes by the National University of Ireland.

In 1966, the first lay students were admitted to the College. Student numbers grew rapidly, and the range of courses on offer expanded.

The Universities Act (1997) resulted in the creation of a new university, National University of Ireland, Maynooth. St. Patrick's College, which consists of the Pontifical University and the National Seminary, continues to exist side by side with NUI Maynooth. The two institutions share the same campus and work in close co-operation with each other. Some of the pages on this website, and in particular many of those relating to services for students, are common to both institutions
