Essay Competition of archaeological interest

KILDARE GENERAL, 23 April 2002: by Brian Byrne. The Kildare Archaeological Society is inviting essays for the The Lord Walter FitzGerald Prize for Research 2003. The prize will be awarded annually on the basis of an essay reporting original research on any aspect of the archaeology or history of County Kildare or surrounding districts, including research about persons or families of Kildare, or well known to have resided there at one time.

The prize commemorates Lord Walter FitzGerald (1858-1923), a founder member of the society and one of the principal contributors to its Journal throughout its early decades.

Applicants are invited to submit an essay of 5,000 to 7,000 words, including footnotes. A prize of ¤500 and a medal will be awarded to the essay recommended by the judging panel. All essays submitted will be considered for publication in the Journal of the County Kildare Archaeological Society.

The judging panel for 2002 will comprise Henry McDowell, FIGRS, President of the society, Dr R. Gillespie, Editor of the Journal, Dr R.J. Aylmer, Council Member, Seamus Cullen, Michael Kavanagh and Patrick Guinness.

Essays for the prize in 2003 should be submitted by 30 September 2002. An application form may be accessed from the society's site on the Kildare Community Network.
