ATHY, 30 April 2002: by Brian Byrne. A boat rally has been organised for Athy from 3-6 May by the North Barrow Branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI) in association with the Vicarstown Canal Development Group.
Local boats and craft moving upstream will assemble in Athy on the Friday and Saturday and a procession of boats will travel along the Grand Canal to Vicarstown for the official opening of the rally on Sunday.
Activities will include canoe water polo and a water display by restored vintage fire tenders. There will also be a ‘bridge of boats’ across the river Barrow.
