Veteran car rally brings back memories

CELBRIDGE, 1 May 2002: by Brian Byrne. A Veteran Car and Motorcycle Rally held in Celbridge at the weekend brought back many nostalgic memories to many people, including this writer, as car models which many would have owned themselves were assembled at the Abbey.

In addition to the fairly usual selection of Minis, Midgets and Morris cars, there was a fascinating area devoted to American vehicles, which ranged from a Ford Edsel - the company's most outstanding disaster in the late 50s - to a Pontiac GTO, Cadillacs, and a very non-vintage Hummer Turbo.

Particular memories for me included a Rover 2000 TC, a Ford Corsair which I very much wanted my father to buy when it came out, and a much-admired Opel Coupe GT which was stacked beside the larger Chevrolet Corvette from which it derived its shape.

Two canvassing politicians were spotted - Bernard Durkan, the veteran Fine Gael TD, and newer model from the Fianna Fail stable, Paul Kelly.
