Council will not do former CES work

15 July 2003: Kildare County Council has refused a request from Celbridge to take over the work of the Celbridge Tidy Towns CES scheme which was discontinued last January.

The Council says it will only provide street sweeping and the cutting of tall grass on approach roads to the town.

This is despite a suggestion from Denator Katherine Walsh that the Council 'would do the work anyway' when the employment scheme was scrapped with the connivance of the Progressive Democrats.

Work previously done by workers on the scheme included weed clearance on all approach roads and non-housing estate roads, maintaining flower and shrub beds, removal of rubbish dumped in ditches and on grass margins, and margin grass cutting on all approach roads and green areas outside of housing estates.

Celbridge Community Council will discuss the matter at a meeting on 21 July.
