SEWAGE BLOCKAGE AT CRADDOCKSTOWN ROAD, NAAS
ON WEDNESDAY 13TH AUGUST 2003.

Naas Town Council was informed of a sewage overflow on the Craddockstown Road at approximately 5p.m. on Wednesday 13th August 2003.

The Council staff arrived at the scene at 5.30p.m. They established the cause of the overflow to be a blocked sewer. Jetting machines were engaged to release the blockage.

Sewage had overflowed onto the public road and green areas in front of Lakelands Estate. This Councils staff in conjunction with the Fire Service immediately commenced the clean up of the affected areas. The areas were completely swept and heavily disinfected. There was no sewage left on the footpaths or the road overnight.

The grass area which was affected was cordoned off overnight and no cars were allowed into the cul-de-sac adjacent to this area on the morning of the 14th August. On the advice of the Environmental Health Section of the Health Board, peat moss was spread over the green areas on the morning of the 14th August.

The sewage overflow consisted entirely of domestic sewage and there was no evidence of any clinical or hospital waste in the overflow.

There is no history of blockages on this sewer line. The cause of the blockage is not known as yet but probably resulted from debris getting into the sewer line and or a build up of grit or sludge over time. Efforts are continuing to be made to identify the source of the blockage, a CCTV survey will also be carried out to assist in identifying the cause of the blockage.

The Council will carry out regular inspections of the sewer line and will undertake regular jetting of the line. Some remedial works to the sewer line and manholes in this area will be undertaken when the Craddockstown Road is re-aligned.

This Council wishes to reassure residents that there is no possibility of this sewage overflow contaminating the public water supply.

Sewage blockages occur in the sewer network from time to time and this Council are satisfied that this overflow was dealt with in a prompt manner and in accordance with standard procedures.

Signed: D. KIRRANE, TOWN CLERK
