Senator opposes N9 motorway

KILDARE SOUTH, 9 April 2002: by Brian Byrne. Kildare Senator John Dardis says the building of a motorway from Kilcullen to Waterford ‘would be a waste of public money’.

The Progressive Democrat, who is a candidate for Kildare South in the General Elections in May, says that such a motorway would cost a billion euros, but a ‘modern, safe, high-quality road’ more than capable of carrying ‘even optimistically high’ traffic flows could be built for less than half that.

“This view has been endorsed by independent economic analysis,” he said this week, following challenges to his view. “Think of what the 500 million euros saved could do for other essential services - for cancer care, support for carers and the disabled in Kildare, and for Army pensions.”

The alternative road he envisages would include by-passes of Casterdermot and Carlow, among other towns on the route to Waterford and the South-East.
