Edenderry 'special' fundraisers

EDENDERRY 05 February 2003: Edenderry may be one of the smaller host towns to the Special Olympic Games 2003, but it is certainly not one of the smaller contributors according to regional development co-ordinator Mary Mulvin.

The town, which plays host to the Swaziland delegation, have hit their target budget by over 645%, making them the second highest fundraisers in Ireland.

The funds have been raised through a variety of fundraising events including the sponsored use of gym equipment by local school children.

However, committee chairperson, Noel Brady added that although Edenderry had done extremely well to date, the fundraising was far from over as any extra funds which were collected would be redistributed to other towns who had not been able to meet their targets.

He also reminded about the “Support an athlete” campaign, which involved sponsoring either a local athlete or one from another country for E1,000; this could be done through local businesses, clubs, organisations and schools. A number of other events are also planed to raise the much needed cash including a “Flag day” which is organised for the 8th of February, a church gate collection on 1 March as well as a sponsored walk organised by the bridge club for 11 May.

Sean Norman (entertainment committee) also wanted to highlight some of the entertainment, which is planned to celebrate the event in Edenderry, including an open-air music festival in June, which would include a traditional night on the 17th and a night of modern entertainment, which will feature rock band “SIDE CHAIN” on the 18th.

This would also coincide with entertainment, which is being organised in Dublin by Tyrone Productions, which will see acts such as U2 and The Corrs performing. Mary Mulvin also added, that they were delighted with the level of interest that people were showing in the event and said it was a great opportunity for people to get involved.

Volunteers are still needed and anyone wishing to get involved should register their interest with the committee or the Dublin office.
