Evelyn Bracken - a profile

Evelyn Bracken, having reared a family of nine (seven girls & two boys) in the old family home, Harbour View, Naas, is no stranger to problems that beset families or the needs of youth. Being a very socially conscious person her children, even in their teenage years, had to share her with the general public. In the 1960s-1970s, in conjunction with a number of other dedicated people, she was actively involved in running a Youth Club for the teenagers of Naas. Unlike today, this was at a time of no grants or government support at local level! Was elected onto the Executive, National Federation of Youth Clubs where she served 10 -12 yrs.

Following a serious local housing problem in Naas (1970s) she was asked to assist the people in their campaign to be housed and this was her first contact with local politics. She contested the U.D.C. elections of 1979 (on housing) and was the first woman, ever, to top the poll, locally, as an independent (non -party) candidate! This despite her strong republican background, which was not altogether a very popular viewpoint to hold at that period. However, her consistent attention to local issues ensured her retaining her seat, on council, over the years. Sincerely working for the people and never the one to mislead people with wild promises, she looks forward to continued endeavours on their behalf. Evelyn takes this opportunity to thank all family-relatives and friends, who over the years canvassed door to door on her behalf, and those of the electorate who consistently gave her their first preference vote.

As an independent (non-party) candidate No.1 votes are of vital importance. Being complacent and thinking " oh she'll make it alright" could upset all in the final count. Your No. 1 before her name, on the ballot paper, will secure her seat and your voice to be heard in the years ahead!

In her twenty years on the Vocational Education Committee she worked hard on behalf of Naas and schools across the county (with emphasis on adult education & night classes). Director of Racing Apprentice Centre of Education. On Board of Management St. Wolstan's School, Celbridge. On Board of Management Colaiste Ciaran, Leixlip. Garda Liaison Committee member. Protocol Committee member. Member V.E.C. Youth & Sports Grants Committee. (on which she strives hard to secure grants for clubs etc. in Naas area.) Over the years deeply involved in working/collecting for numerous charitable organisations.

Background:
Although born just across the border in Co.Offaly both her parents were of Kildare stock. Her mother's family farmed at Barnaran, Rathangan and her father's resided, for generations, at Greenhills (near Naas) all of whom attended school in Naas. Historically, her paternal side has strong links with Naas. Her ancestor John Dunne, with men from Kill & Johnstown area, took part in the capture of Naas Artillery Barracks in 1798. Another relative, John Devoy (after whom Devoy Barracks is named) was born and reared on the family land at Greenhills, worked in Naas and organised the famous 'Catalpa' rescue of Fenians from Freemantle, Australia. Her grandfather, Pat Dunne and his elder sons all took an active part in the War of Independence and some were 'guests of the crown' in Naas jail. (ref.records: Nat. Military History Bureau).
