24-hour garda station comes closer

KILDARE NORTH, 7 May 2002: by Brian Byrne. A 24-hour garda station in North Kildare looks closer now that local garda authorities have strongly suggested to the Garda Commissioner that such a station is required.

The station would serve Maynooth and Celbridge in the Carlow/Kildare Division.

Preliminary estimates prior to the recent census suggest that the population of North Kildare has increased by almost 15%, while Maynooth and Celbridge between them are believed to have 25,000 people.

The move has been welcomed by deputy Emmet Stagg, who made a submission to the Carlow/Kildare Division last February, pointing out that the only request for a 24-hour station since 1990 had been for Ashbourne, Co Meath.

He said it was unacceptable that the three existing 24-hour stations in Kildare were located in the mid-county.
