Major development for Maynooth

11 August 2003: A decision by An Bord Pleanala to grant planning permission for the redevelopment of the former Kavanagh`s Mill site in Maynooth will regenerate the former Mill site which had been an eyesore in the Town Centre for many years and which had been derelict since the closure of Kavanagh`s Mills in 1998.

The development now approved incorporates a Convenience Food Store, Department Store, 22 Retail Units, 10 units of Office Space , 190 Apartments in 9 Blocks, two Restaurants and a Public House, a Leisure Centre and a Creche.

Concerns had been expressed in Maynooth in relation to the impact this development would have in terms of Maynooth Castle, St Mary's Church and St Patrick's College but amendments were made to three of the proposed apartment blocks which will reduce the impact the development will have on these historical landmarks. The development will also provide a landscaped linear park along the Lyreen River which will provide a pleasant walking area for the Public.

In addition to the rejuvenation of this area physically there will be a considerable jobs boost to Maynooth with up to 400 jobs during construction and up to 300 jobs in the different components of the project.

Whilst no specific sum is mentioned in An Bord Pleanala`s conditions in relation to contributions towards the Maynooth Town Improvement Scheme it is anticipated that just under E300,000 will be made available towards the scheme from this development.

The decision has been welcomed by Cllr John Mc Ginley who said that he was pleased that this area of Maynooth would at last be developed into a place the people of Maynooth could be proud of.
