NAAS, 21 May 2002: by Trish Whelan. A Man Utd jersey, signed by Irish captain Roy Keane, was handed over to its new owner at a special ceremony in Naas Care of the Aged last week.

The jersey had fetched 500 euros for the charity when auctioned on local radio.

“I bought it for a number of reasons,” said Shane Campbell of the Monread Lodge pub in Naas. “First and foremost I’m a big Man U fan and it was very important it didn’t fall into the wrong hands!!!

“When ABU Kevin Gralton - from the Anyone But Utd camp - asked us to support this particular charity, we were very glad to do so. So I scored two goals in one!”

He said the jersey will probably end up hanging in the Monread Lodge pub, safely away from all Liverpool fans ... but on view.

Kevin Gralton was given the jersey by well known Athy fundraiser Declan Byrne who often receives such momentos for charity. “Declan used to help us fundraise in the early 1990s for Crumlin Hospital,” Kevin explained. “I’m delighted it raised so much for Naas Care of the Aged.”
